    Limping...sometimes

    hi all,
Kai is 7 months old. a couple months back after some play in the yard he came in with a fairly significant limp. trip to vet determined his little front toe was sore, x-rays were clear. it just about cleared up with shorter walks and attempts to keep play calmer. then a big flare up on a walk with no explanation. more x-rays and nothing found. nothing sore. they had a radiologist re-read and confirm nothing wrong. took two weeks off walking then returned with once a week (no issues), then when I tried twice a week the limp returned right at the end just a little like at the last couple houses away from home (short walk).

Kai plays quite hard and show no sign of discomfort. runs, chases, catch , fetch, tug with our older lab Kona etc. hes pretty wild. More so than my previous two labs by a margin.

BUT - never limps in the house, plays with no apparent issue or limp.

if this was a human child i would think he is messing with us to avoid walking...

I have rimadyl but haven't used it much.

    any thoughts or advice?

Second opinion from a more orthopedic vet? or a rehab specialist? Is his pad ok? pen would get all gimpy when her pad ripped (which happened one or twice a year).

as for why he can still play and be fine - play is fun and easier to push thru the pain especially a young dog that wants to play.

    good luck! re-occuring limps are...annoying!

My boy Asher's ED was not apparent in x-rays....it was very apparent in a CT scan. I went through months of limp, no limp, etc. And when he did limp, it was just oh so slightly. His gate was off though and I kept pushing the vet on doing more discovery. When he walks, do you notice his head down a lot? What side is he limping on? Does his head follow the leg that hurts? Asher's limp was on the left side. His head was always down and followed the left legs. Good luck. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing for you and your pup.

I am doubtful its ED. The vet was open to more investigation with a CT. we are going to try rimadil for a few days and light walks. I thought this med was only for pain but looked it up and its also for inflammation. Should have stayed with it earlier but failed. So need to try that before getting into the next bracket of vet bills.

I sure hope you are correct. My vet was doubtful it was ED as well. He was thinking tendinitis, growing pains, bone inflammation, etc. I felt good it wasn't ED. It is what it is at this point and Asher is now 2 weeks post op. He is doing well and I'm hopeful for his outcome. My biggest issue is keeping him confined. As you know, 16 month old labs have TONS of energy. Best of luck with your guy. Keep us updated!

yeah both times the vet said to keep his play mellow-er with less jumping around and such. I laughed. Kai is fearless, jumps off the bed, deck, patio over his brother, bounds around all the time. just yesterday we took him for a ride in the truck and he jumped in all on his own unprompted (no dog we have had did this), then even when trying to corral him when I opened the door - yup he was out. we do think its an injury of some kind. we just dont know the extent. and he is so wild it may take a long time to resolve. definitely does not slow him down. x-rays were clear. so...time will tell.

should CT scans be needed - whats a rough cost for those and having them read?

Asher's surgeon is in Akron,Ohio. The cost to have both elbows scanned and interpreted was 1,400.00
