    Dandelions?

Hey all, can dogs get diarrhea from eating dandelions? Anyone have any experience with their dogs eating dandelions and other stuff outside, resulting in diarrhea? Thanks.

Dandelion can cause diarrhea. I've never had a dog appreciate the leaves but did have one who'd behead the plants as he walked along. I don't remember him ever actually eating any. As long as you don't spray the dandelions that he has access to...including ones that park staff may be spraying....you should be OK. Limit him if his bowels get too loose and make sure he has access to ample water....dandelion is a diuretic.

I've never had a dog get diarrhea from any outside plants but I've removed some toxic ones from the yard, especially for puppies (jack in the pulpit and may apple are two that I remember de-fruiting some years).

Thank you, the last few days she’s been ripping off the heads and whatever she can get, and eating them. She’s had diarrhea since, doesn’t learn her lesson. I actually took a fecal to the vet to be safe and no parasites. But she still has diarrhea. In the process of weeding this buggers out of the yard but there’s a lot. Don’t want to use any herbicides but I’ve read about vinegar killing them. Thanks for the advice. Hoping the diarrhea slows down soon. We’re on day 3 and limiting the eating of them.

Also upon researching dandelions, all I’m really seeing is that it can be good for animals to eat. So that kind of worried me.

Even things that are good to eat can be laxative in excess.

I've used vinegar/salt (boiling) to kill pokeweed (long roots)...I imagine you'd be killing the surrounding grass, too, if you used it there. My poke was in a mulched area.

In TCM dandelions cleanse the liver, so seeing some diarrhea is normal.

In human grade 'baby green salads' there are baby dandelion leaves in them. All good stuff .

Well we took her to the vet because yesterday was day 5 of diarrhea. Also noticed some really tiny white balls in her stool. Vet did full fecal and everything came back negative. No worms or parasites. She wasn’t even sure what the white balls were. She said they didn’t look like eggs or segments.

She gave us some Drontal Plus to be safe and some ProPectalin for the diarrhea. Told us to contact them if it doesn’t get better by Friday. Just kind of watch what she eats kind of thing. Man this is frustrating.

What size were the tiny white balls? Did you cut into one of them to check it out?

It could be something like undigested millet...if they're small enough...birdseed that she's gotten into. Harmless if that.

They were tiny. Some were like the tip of ball point. And they were hard. Too small to cut them open. Can’t think of anything she may have gotten into.

Vet wasn’t too concerned so we’ll give it a few days. Just frustrating, feel bad for her.

My guess would be something in her food that's passing through. You probably didn't analyze her poo before this started...they could have been evident all along. I'm one of those people who visually checks out every poo for softness and every now and then I'll see something less common and realize that it was from a particular biscuit I gave the day before or something like that. Some food seems to have more particulate output than others, too.

Amazing how fascinating poo seems to be as a topic of conversation.... People without dogs don't know what they're missing.
