We use Zymox Otic or Zymox Otic with hydrocortisone if the ears are painful. The hydrocortisone reduces the discomfort and allow the ears to heal if their messing with it which can cause even more problems. Do treat the ears as soon as you see something. A dog's ear canals are very deep and twisty and if something yeasty gets really established, it's very difficult to clear it up, especially during allergy season if only because it's next to impossible to get any kind of liquid all the way down the canal.

I too have had very good results with the "purple solution". I did use witch hazel in place of the alcohol along with the boric acid and gentian violet. It did take about three weeks to see results but we haven't had a problem since.

I think that K9 Ear Solutions is the best. I bought a bottle of Epi-Otic Advanced from the vet, but I think the K9 Ear Solutions is much better. It dries out the ear really well.

Have been busy but here is an update. I stopped cleaning the ear to see if that was the issue but it was still red then when I was petting him on Thursday he yipped when I touched his ear. I took him to my back up vet that is close to my house for a second opinion as the vet I work for kept saying its just allergies but never really used anything to look deep in his ears. He does have an inffection which this vet said is allergy related and prob wasn't as goopy because of me cleaning them. She dispenced something similar to otomax and put him on cephalexin. I can already see a differance. He had it in both ears but the left one is worse. My husband really annoyed me becasue he wanted this dog then complained about the 10 min appointment cost him 83 dollars, Really? Im like stop your complaining thats cheap compared to somethings.

I took my youngest, Boss, in because he was having nasty brown gunk build up every couple of days. I would clean it and swear it came back with a vengeance. Anyways, vet said it was most likely due to allergies and to use the zymox cleaner. I had some already so I have been using it now for 3 days and have noticed a slight decrease in gunk. he definitely is not scratching or shaking his head as much. vet said I should use it for 14 days and if nothing changes to bring him back in and she will try antibiotics. reason she didn't give them to start is antibiotics can cause yeast infections and if we are battling that she didn't want to encourage it.

    hope yours works!!

I've used Zymox occasionally also when ears get bad; but for maintenance I use an unfiltered apple cider vinegar and water solution on a cotton pad a couple times a week. Seems to work for my two.
