    inflamed ears

Gauge is now over his skin issue due to allergies and now his ear is all read and gets waxy and dirty. Vet said its also part of allergies and not infected. I've been cleaning it everyday with some ear cleaner from the vet but is thier anything to calm down the redness. Was wondering what those of you use at home for those who dogs have ear isssues. I don't want to keep pumping him with meds. He just finished his antibiotic and he is still on aterax for itching. I thought maybe a benadryl but hes already on aterax. I've never owned a big dog or a dog will allergy issues. My sheltie has a food allergy to corn which I used to feed Eagle pack back in the day. He would get hot spots all the time and itch like crazy.

What are you using to clean his ears? Daily cleaning can sometimes cause issues as it affects the normal ph of the ear. When I put Maxx on grain free food it helped immensely, what are you feeding? The Epi-Otic solution seemed to do the trick for Maxx, I still use it every 10 days or so. His ears have been clear for over a year. *knock wood*

Abbey had chronic ear issues. Had her tested for food allergies and switched her food. She still loves to get wet, we still clean her ears 1x per week, but her ears are 98% better.

What are you cleaning with daily?

Epi Otic has salicylic acid in it. It might reduce pain but contribute to redness and irritation. If you are sure the infection is done with can you try cutting down on the cleaning? Just let him scratch and shake for day, as long as he does not hurt himself, try to go every second day, then every third day.

Aterax may not work for his ears. Ears might be the only place his allergies hit him and you may just need to try something else. What does your Vet say?

One of Ram's ears had been bothering him so the vet did a swab and there was no infection. She made a concoction using tree tea oil for me to use which has reduced the redness in his ear and seems to be very soothing for him. I have attached a link if you want to make it at home.

Tea tree oil is a good idea, probably better than the Epi-Otic.

Be careful with the Tea Tree Oil too. TTO is basically turpentine and it's a known skin irritant for some. Especially be careful if there is already irritated skin. I know it's diluted but the salicylic acid in Epi Otic is only 0.1%

I was also wondering if the ear cleaner was irritating his ears so I will stop gor a few days and see if that helps. It does seem to get more red after I clean them. Its a cleaner from the vet called vet solutions not sure if thats the company who makes it or what its called. Vet said its similar to the epi otic. Hes eating Health extention original hes doinb well on it. They do have a gf that if this dosnt clear up Ill try switching him to. I think its buffalo and whitefish. We will see Ive had issues finding him a food that didnt give him loose stools.

Lots of veterans on the board in the past have recommended the purple stuff, which can be purchased here.

    Ingredients include:

    Isopropyl Alcohol
    Boric Acid
    Gentian Violet
    Colloidal Silver

It's worked well for my dog and my roommate's dog.

It sounds like your dog may have a "yeast" infection in his ear. I am quite surprised that a Vet would disregard these symptoms?

There is a medication called "Otomax", that works very well to help heal the inflammation and yeast.

Please ask your Vet about it.
