    Constipation

Hello there! Overnight last night, my 11 month old lab puppy woke me up 4 times to go outside to go to the bathroom, which is very out of character. She usually has to be dragged outside in the morning, as she loves her sleep. However, each time she went out, she was struggling to go number 2, and wasn’t able to get anything to come out. So a few hours later, she was crying at the door to go out again. This has me worried because she is a dog that occasionally eats things she shouldn’t (ex. Her harness, collar, etc.) but, she almost always throws whatever she shouldn’t have eaten up. She is crated when she is home alone for her safety. I don’t know if she got into something and swallowed it, I just know it isn’t outside the realm of possibility. We also just started adding a very small amount of wet food to her meals (less than a tablespoon per 2 cups dry food in the morning and again in the afternoon). She has access to the backyard to do her business, so we don’t have to see her go. Because of this, I’m not sure the last time she was able to successfully go number 2, but waking up all throughout the night only started last night. I took the day off work today to stay home with her to monitor her, but I’m wondering what I should do. Of course my first thought is to rush her to the vet, but I didn’t know if there were any home remedies I could try first.

If you haven't changed her food and you don't know if she got into something she shouldn't have....I'd be at the vet, or at least calling them, thinking that an x-ray might be a good idea.

    Good luck!

Yes, if she is still trying, you can't find a result and she has a history of eating things inedible I'd worry about a blockage. To the Vet. Please, absolutely DO NOT give anything to a dog straining to poop if you don't know the cause. Some laxative remedies work by softening stool, others by stimulating muscle contraction, probalby some do both. If there is a blockage that will not respond to those you could cause terrible pain.

I've had 2 dogs develop obstructions from eating things they shouldn't, so my recommendation is also a trip to the vet. Mine got a few xrays that ended up being nothing more than peace of mind for me but straining to poop like you describe and her tendency to eat random stuff would be a vet visit at my house.

Does the dog chew on grass? Our boy Jack acted like he had an obstruction but the vet thought it would pass. It ended up being a wad of half digested gross grass. It finally passed. They go crazy this time of the year. Hope it all works out.

She doesn’t eat grass often. The vet palpated her stomach and did a rectal exam and said all looked okay. We mixed some pumpkin in her food, and she passed two small, somewhat liquidy stools, so we’re feeling hopeful that she will be okay!

She could have diarrhea instead of constipation. They strain to go as they have the urgent feel to go, but there is nothing in there. The fact that you did not see her go gives no indication of which she has. Hope she clears up soon and is back to her normal self.
