The other thought I had was a neck/spine injury that waxes and wanes. My dog Yukon injured his C spine and was in rough shape for a while (months) but improved. Unfortunately it's always a threat with him and although it was his neck/spine, he would walk gingerly and limp off an on on his left front leg.

    Continued good thoughts for you.
    UPDATE
You were bang on.... I noticed last evening that the nail on the swollen toe was about to fall off. I secured the nail with wrapping his paw and then put a sock on his foot for the night. We went to the Vet this morning, had the nail removed and once the nail was completely off pus started draining from his toe. He had X-rays done to ensure he didn’t have infection in the bone... thankfully he doesn’t. He is back on pain meds, antibiotics for 2 weeks, his foot is wrapped for the weekend and then we will start soaking it once a day and applying antibiotic ointment. Hopefully once the wrap is off we can keep him from licking it otherwise he will have to wear a cone. He is to return th the Vet in two weeks if the swelling isn’t gone. It’s good to finally know what is going on with him

I'm glad you found the cause. In Tanner's case, once he was correctly diagnosed, he was better literally within hours given the NSAID and Antibiotic. Within 24hrs he was almost normal, but was on meds for a couple weeks.

    Good Wishes for recovery.

Such a relief! Guessing games on what is wrong with them is very stressful. So happy you have a definitive answer. Hope he heals up quickly.

It sure is stressful not knowing what is going on, but knowing something definitely isn’t right. We didn’t see our regular vet yesterday and the one we saw has no “dog side manners”.. she didn’t even as much a give Cooper a quick pat before assessing him and was quick to throw around amputating his toe due to infection or possible tumor before she even so much as glances at his X-ray (which I insisted be done due to the fact he has had intermittent pain and swelling in his toe for 3 months and this was our 3 visit for the same reason)
Anyay I am thankful we now know what is going on and he seems quite comfortable with the wrap on and is being a good boy and leaving it alone. We will go back in two weeks if his toe is still swollen ( or sooner if needed) but I will see our regular vet
Thanks for the good wishes... hope you Samson continues to do well

Whew...glad you have a diagnosis and he's on his way to recovery.

I'll bet that vet doesn't have people crawling all over each other, trying to get appointments based on her personality. She'd better hope people think she knows her stuff. I aim for knowledge but I'll avoid any vet who doesn't seem to like his/her patients enough to say "hello" and do at least a quick pet before getting started. (I always think of vets as really wanting to be working with their chosen patients...really caring...not just tolerating them. You want to just tolerate somebody, be a...I don't know....tree surgeon. Yeah, I was grasping there...didn't want to offend anybody's profession.)

Lol... I agree with you completely. The Vet I usually see will sit on the floor and be at eye level with the dogs, let the sniff him, give him kisses and they get pats ... then they get their exam. And now that I am thinking of it, my usual vet gives them a head to tail go over no matter what we are there for, always listens to their heart, lungs, feels their bellies and so on...this vet skipped all of the above and went right to his toe...hhhmmmm....

Cooper’s wrap has been off of his foot a few days now, the swelling has subsided significantly and he hasn’t been limping or favoring that paw at all... he was very interested in licking it when the wrap first came off, but he seems to be leaving things alone now.... and the quick is completely covered with a new nail growth already. He is on antibiotics for another nine days... so far so good

So great to hear that Cooper is doing well! I know how confusing and nerve-wracking it can be to have amputation being thrown around as an option.
