    The itch that won’t stop

About 2 weeks ago, my lab puppy started scratching, biting, and licking herself more than usual. She receives her frontline every month on the same day, and we have another dog (a husky) that isn’t bothered and is still acting normally. We haven’t changed anything lately, her food is still the same, and she hasn’t been anywhere new. I don’t know why she’s so itchy!! I gave her a bath using a burt’s Bees oatmeal bath scrub, and it helped for only about a day. She has one spot under her “chin” that she has scratched so much, it has scabbed over, and now she keeps scratching at the scab and reopening it so it bleeds again. Upon inspection of her itchiest spots, I’m not seeing any dry or red skin, or any kinds of bumps or scabs apart from her chin area. She sleeps in the bed with me, pressed right up against me, and I’m not feeling itchy effects either. Could she be suffering from mosquito bites from our nighttime trips to the dog park? What else could be going on? How can I help her?

Do you use a plastic bowl to feed her? Plastic has been known to cause acne, which is sometimes itchy.

What other body parts get scratched a lot?

Plastic bowl to feed, metal bowl for water. She’s itchy on her “knees” of her back legs and her belly.

She could be having a reaction to the Frontline? Have you consulted with your Vet?

I haven’t yet. I have a tendency to over react when it comes to the puppy 🙃 she’s my first dog. She hasn’t had an issue up until this point. Would a frontline issue start after she’s been on it?

How old is she? Is her puppy coat shedding out? They can get pretty itchy then, with any shed really. Yes, try a metal or ceramic feeding dish. Plastic can cause problems as it gets scratched and the scratches can harbour bacteria. That would only affect her chin though, I think.

She will be 1 next week. She doesn’t seem to be shedding more than usual, but life with a husky brother, her shedding can go unnoticed. When do they typically lose their puppy coats? I’ll try switching the bowl. Any other ideas on how I can help her? I feel bad she’s so itchy. I know I get crazy when I itch.

If she's itching only the lower half of her body I wonder if something is irritating her skin. Perhaps floor chemicals or a certain rug?

Did the itching start right after she got the Frontline, is that why you mentioned it? Maybe she's been lying in grass or weeds outside that are irritating her skin or there's some other environmental change that's just part of the natural seasonal cycle even though it's in an area she's accustomed to. Or maybe the dog park gets sprayed with something?

You could try wiping her chin after she eats with either unscented baby wipes or just some mild soapy water on a washcloth or paper towel. I've also heard of people using chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) or Stridex pads to clean puppy acne chins. If she's your first pup, I'd probably run those past her vet since your vet might not be OK with the hibiclens or stridex suggestions. Labs often don't need a lot of bathing with shampoo since it can strip their coat of natural oils and dry their skin, making the itchiness worse. You could try rinsing her with clear water or wiping her down with a damp wash cloth after outdoor or dog park adventures also to see if that helps in case it's something she's coming into contact with outside.

Does she lay in the grass too? It could be grass itself or a chemical on the grass
