    Odd Reaction From Asher

So - several times since Asher's surgery, he has growled at me while I rub his back legs. Pre-surgery, Asher would lay with me on the couch and I would massage his chest and/or his back legs....the area right above the paws. He used to love it. Now, he growls and jerks back. Not every single time but each time he does it, it catches me off guard because this behavior is new. I forget and just start rubbing because it's so natural.....I've done it for months and he's loved it. They did shave the same area I rub for surgery. When he came home from surgery, for the first few weeks, I couldn't touch the top of his back along the tail area. He would turn in circles in almost a panicked state. Poor guy. That was totally new as well and has gone away. For the paws, I just stop rubbing and move back to his chest and he relaxes. I just wonder why is he growling? Bad surgery memory? The shave for the surgery? Rough handling pre surgery? I dunno. It's been 11 weeks since surgery.

I've had mutliple surgeries and it seems that the area around the incision is numb/sore to the touch for a period of time following the surgery. The length of time varies based on location and/or size of the incision. Maybe the area your touching has this type of issue, causing Asher's reaction.

The only thing in that area was the shaving for the IV. His surgery was on his elbows. He's had his nails trimmed a few times since surgery and I've asked each time and he didn't give the techs any issues with the back paws...they can do it while he's standing. Also, last week after his rehab, I asked the therapist he she was able to massage his back legs. She said yes. I guess I should have added that info to the original post.

My guess is that he's walking differently to accommodate the healing up front and he's tweaked something in the hind legs as a result...some new posture that has now also been overused over time. The legs may not be the issue, only the area closer to the paws.

I'll keep an eye on it and see if I notice anything.

Needle hit a nerve? I know a lady that happened to on a routine vaccination and it took many, many months to get over. Could happen with the needle from pre-op blood draw or the anaesthetic? Our Jet was always touch sensitive and I always wondered if it was all the handling, many needles, IV in, when she had parvo as a puppy. She was at Vet's for 4 days though. I would keep an eye on too. Well of course you are.
