    High Kidney Levels?

Hi everyone, hope you're doing well! I recently took Benji for his annual exam and our vet was super pleased with the physical portion of it. Weight, joints, eyes/teeth, etc. However, when we ran a blood panel, the kidney levels returned a little high. My vet immediately told me not to lose sleep over it (I'm a worrier ) and that we would do another panel in 6 months to see if this was a fluke or if it needs to be addressed with a diet change. I plan on stopping by to pick up the actual lab results soon, but I haven't had time yet. Has anyone else had this happen? If so, how did you address it wrt diet changes? Ben is 10 yrs old and 58 lbs, and he has been fed Fromm Classic Adult (not senior) most of his life. Thanks in advance!

Did the vet do a quick check for dehydration?

From Web M.D.: You may be able to detect dehydration at home by gently lifting the skin on the back of your dog's neck or between the shoulder blades-unless your dog is seriously overweight or very thin, it should immediately return to a normal position. If he is lacking in fluids, the lifted skin may not quickly return to normal

Did the vet listen to his heart? Could be heart but I think it would have to be severe enough to be showing other symptoms, too.

At his age, is he experiencing any muscle wasting? I see it in Sunnie's hind end (her last bloodwork was fine but muscle wasting can throw off the values).

Other things are kidney related...infection, poison, blockage, that kind of thing...again, other symptoms are likely, I think.

Check for dehydration...see if you can get more fluid into him if he's not a big drinker. Good sign that the vet recommends a "wait and see" at this point.

    Good luck.

Yep, dehydration was my thought as well. Were all kidney values elevated and if so, how much? A slight elevation is not a cause for concern.

Just checked for dehydration and he seems to be well-hydrated. He's a pretty good drinker, so I don't know if that's it. Vet did listen to his heart, but didn't find anything abnormal; I'll make sure to have him officially check heart and hydration at our next visit. Ben's muscle mass seems okay too, he's still fit enough for 1.5 hour walks that we try to do most days, but he's definitely not as toned as he used to be. I'll keep an eye out for that, too. @Berna, two of the kidney values were slightly elevated...I am probably overreacting but it's hard not to with these little guys!

It can be a fluke. I took Tickle to the vet to have a urinalysis done and turned out she had high liver numbers. When I retested 3 days later, they dropped half way back to normal.
