    Fractured Toe?

We just got home from the vet and they think Bubba has a fractured toe. Despite a very thorough physical they weren't able to get any verbal pain responses (he was on high alert at the vet so it may have been too much adrenaline), but he did seem extra agitated with one particular toe. We're going to give it a week of rest plus Rimadyl and then come back in to re-check and potentially take x-rays. In their experience, if it is a fracture, either they are able to successfully splint it for 8 weeks (of full rest), or they aren't able to successfully splint it (can't keep the dog calm that long) and then either the toe remains fractured, but for some reason doesn't bother the dog anymore or they have to amputate the toe. These do not seem like good options to me! Anyone had experience with this?

    Back story:
We've been on a whirlwind 4 week road trip of camping. The first week we spent at my family's lakehouse in maine (Bubba's favorite place on earth). It was there that he hurt is paw. I think that he got too excited for a throw and stumbled on some rocks because he wasn't looking where he was going. From that point on in the trip if someone did "shake" with him or touched his paw he would shriek with pain. But other than that seemed completely fine. Ran, hiked, swam, would only limp on the very rare occasion if he encountered rocky ground and then only for a few seconds and would be back to fine again. Since he didn't seem to be in pain we decided to wait until we got home to see his regular vet. This weekend was the first time he seemed to be in pain for an extended period and couldn't seem to get comfortable laying down. Luckily we had the appointment already set up for this Monday. Of course if was frustrating at the appointment that he wouldn't give the same verbal pain responses he's been giving us for a month.

Oh, ouch. I hope the x-rays will reveal something like a (now) deep splinter/thorn or something like that...something much easier to fix.

I suppose they could splint it up with enough bandaging to allow a fracture to heal and still allow him to walk, and you could keep him crated...but 8 weeks for that, especially since a fracture would have gotten pretty aggravated by now...I'm sending all good thoughts that it's not going to turn out to be a fracture.

Friend's dog caught her toe in the deck, running to jump off, broke it and ripped the nail out. It was only bandaged to keep blood off everything but jnot splinted. She just had to rest. Spoiled their agility lessons for several months but no other complications. What can you do with a broken dog toe anyway? I think with humans we just get painkillers if need be, at least that's what I was told for mine.

Years ago, my Fuji broke a toe while running down a bank of big rocks. It took awhile, but the toe ended up fusing on its own and she never had issues again. We did open obedience and some agility even (just at the novice level but she still had to jump 20" jumps).

I realized I never followed up here! After a week of rest (it was a long week), he seemed to be doing a lot better so I opted not to do the xrays. We went in another week later after that again and he was still doing good and didn't give any signs during the physical exam. He's back to all his regular activity and he hasn't shown any signs of limping, and we've been able to coax him into doing shake again with treats so I think it resolved itself on its own which is great!
