Samson had a nasty infection appear while we were on vacation back in April. I used acv and some alcohol until we got back home and to the vet. Swimming caused his. I clean weekly with that solution and no problems. Hope chili is better soon.

I just heard back from my vet friend that most ear infections are yeast and the cream should fix...so I researched yeast infections quickly...Yeast Infection in Dogs: Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

The prednisone and the triamcinolone in the ointment are steroids that will help knock down the swelling, itchiness and pain. The other ingredients in the ointment can work on whatever else might be growing in there, sounds like they will work on a wide variety of organisms. Is it from allergies? It's not impossible, humans can develop allergies to things they were never allergic to when younger so dogs probably can as well. One of the vets in the practice I go to gives prednisone for things like that although some people think that's overkill because they're not fans of steroids. But it will help decrease any swelling in his ear canal and let the other medicine get down deeper into his ear so for a short term thing, I don't have any problem with giving it. Prednisone might make him have to pee more and more often and drink more. Just a side effect to know about if you've never given it before. I've never been given entederm for ear problems but I'm sure there are many options.

Some of the things others are recommending are mainly for cleaning pretty healthy ears, not to treat a bad infection. Putting something with isopropyl alcohol into his ears when they're so inflamed will burn like the dickens and he won't want to let you anywhere near his ears. They might work to help keep healthy ears clean or dry them inside after swim. Once his ears are back to normal, see if your vet has any recommendations for cleaning, there are many choices.

Yeah...my suggestion was for preventative steps after the ears are healed.

I will have to look when I go home at lunch. Hemi typically gets an ear infection once a year. He just had one in July. There are 2 different treatments the vet uses. One is a one time thing, vet applies in the office in each ear and no swimming or water for 2 weeks and everything gets cleared up. I don't know the name of that one, but I love it since I don't have to deal with it. Unfortunately because of Hemi busy life it is not always an option for us. So there is another one Hemi gets where I have to stick a lot point in Hemi ear and squeeze a pea size drop in there twice a day. I have a tube of this at home left over from his ear infection he had in July this year. Hemi can still go swimming every day if he wants. I don't typically like this one because Hemi half goes deaf as it blocks up his ears. But he still gets to have his active summer life. Walking over 80 degrees is not really an option for Hemi, he hates it but swimming is fine. So if it is in the middle of summer I make the choice between active happy hard of hearing Hemi, or inactive bored and unhappy Hemi.

Samson's ears were not red and inflamed. He had brown stuff coming out. Vet recommended the acv and alcohol mix to keep the ears at bay until I could see a vet. Not Samson's first round with ear infection unfortunately. The acv for bacteria and the alcohol for drying after ocean water. My vet always gets us in so we were in the office the day after we got back. He gave him the antibiotic drops. Brown stuff cleared up by the end of the week. Acv and alcohol are best for maintenance. And, never try mixes and put in pups ears unless under supervision of a vet. I have enough issues with ortho stuff, don't need to create my own by self medicating them.

Vets like to blame ear and skin issues, especially with labs, on allergies. At least in my case.

well a short update...that cream has done good stuff so far. his one ear is back to normal, and the really infected ear is way better. If I was a guessing guy, I bet his really bad ear will be back to normal in a day or so more...
