This pic is better. I would be interested to hear more about the non-anesthesia cleanings from someone who has actually had one done, as well. I also wonder how not having the cleaning done if the vet recommended it would affect our pet insurance. I suppose they just wouldn't cover anything tooth-related. But that alone isn't reason enough for me to put her under for a cleaning that may or may not be necessary.

What I see looks more like stain than tartar...and you said there's no red on the gums? I'd go with brushing at this point....maybe use something like Petzlife gel (better than spray). I'm not a fan of anything you put in the water and I have to avoid products with chlorhexadine (irritates the heck out of my dogs' throats).

The woman I used for the non-anesthetic dental is not a vet. I don't know of any vets that offer this service; in fact, most try to discourage it because they say you can't get below the gum line on a dog that is not under anesthesia. No, the dog is not sedated at all. She will give Rescue Remedy if needed, but that's it. She works out of a holistic vet's office and there's a couch you sit on with your dog. I held Brandy while she worked. Obviously, this may not work for all dogs, but Brandy is super mellow and totally cooperative when she's being examined. Although, the woman I used did not seem concerned when I told her my other dog might be a handful. I was very happy with the job she did. She pointed out the tooth that Brandy eventually needed pulled and told me to watch it closely. She taught me how to brush their teeth and told me what to use. I'd do it again if needed.

Much better pic. There is no way I would put this dog thru an anesthesia tooth cleaning by a vet. She does not need it. Get her on marrows and if you want to clean yourself, go for it...... too many vets looking to up the $$$$ register IMO. No different than vulvaplasty surgery for a dog with RV - rather than let her go thru a first heat cycle to correct the issue. uggg

    3ChocMom, thanks for the info.

Doesn't look bad to me either. I'd just start brushing.
