I think Tanya’s Rocky had it too.
Thanks - there is disagreement as to whether or not collars cause this. Most say it doesn't. It is very common in older labs especially males. I am not certain he has it, but he does breathe heavier and pants more. My vet thinks he does, but he has never been scoped. If he stays where he's at and the condition doesn't worsen he will be fine, but if it does it gets really ugly.
I think Tanya’s Rocky had it too.

No input on the LP, but I hope the meds help Charlie!

I'm sorry to hear about Charlie also. I've not had to try to manage that with any of our dogs although I have read about it in the past. I hope the Doxepin slows its roll and Charlie has many fine years ahead.

Nancy, sending Lab board MOJO for your boy along with prayers it is easily cared for. You love your boys and it shows. It's HECK to get old!!! Hoping the meds do their job.

Thank you all for the kind words. I apologize for not being around so much (been hanging out on bird forums ),but trying to come visit here more often. Charlie really is ok right now. He can still run around in the backyard, but he is slower on walks when off leash. It does suck to get old.

We were told that Mulder probably had it, but in retrospect I think he just had the old-age related heavy breathing that Jen mentioned. Jolie on the other hand, definitely had it. She only had one scary breathing incident where she was gasping for air, but she definitely had the hind-end weakness which got pretty bad towards the end. It’s not what got to her in the end - that was a splenic tumor, but she would occasionally collapse in the rear and fall down. It didn’t seem to phase her and never seemed painful though at least.

I wonder if Charlie just has what Jen mentioned. He breathes heavier at times and pants hard when it's hot. His back legs are a bit weaker, but they don't give out. He runs around still. He doesn't wheeze or cough - sleeps fine at night. His bark doesn't seem any different to me. So far I don't think the doxepin has done anything, but it's only been two days so really not fair to judge.
I've decided to take Charlie to a specialist for a second opinion. This is the same surgeon who did obstruction surgery on Charlie nearly 10 years ago. He is awesome!
Tanner had LP, probably around the age of 10 and progressed slowly. I belonged to a group I think on Yahoo for GOLPP - Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis Peripheral Neuropathy. As someone else mentioned, the rear end neuropathy came later and seemed to be more of an issue with back end weakness than the labored breathing. Benedryl supposedly helps as well as Doxepin. I didn't do any surgery and wouldn't for an older dog with this condition, especially where it's slowly progressing.
Keep his back end strength up and common sense regarding breathing during activity and hot weather and excitement/stress inducing situations.
Best of wishes to you.
