Awww Nancy, thinking of Charlie and you. I hope it doesn't progress, if it is LP.

I just spoke to my vet and I think I will cancel the appointment with a specialist (for now) mainly because my vet said I would need to take him off the doxepin so it doesn't skew any tests. I just started him on it and at this point I don't want to take him off because I want to see if it will help. My vet said she is pretty confident he has LP and said she noticed a big change in his breathing from when he had been in there other times. I'm hoping the doxepin helps and we can somehow manage this. Love this boy so much.
My Tootsie had LP, only hers was from having her vocal cords cut (puppy mill survivor). Tootsie wore a collar but just to hold her tags, it could slip over her head, we used a harness when going for walks as any pressure on her throat would have been life threatning. We raised Tootsie's food dish and kept her as calm and as cool as possible. She loved her pool to help keep her cool in the summer months but would supervise her so she wasn't out in the heat of the day. On those really hot humid days i would give her benedryl which seemed to help keep her air passage open more so she could breath easier. Tootsie loved to run and play outside and for the most part she would stop and catch her breath when playing, only on occasion I would have to tell her to take a brake and relax for a bit before she was out and running again.
I hope the meds work for Charlie, we never used meds for Tootsie and the tie back surgery scared me so we didn't do that for Tootsie.

Winnie, my very first lab (born '92) had it. It showed up suddenly at age 11 after I bought new family room furniture that obviously had some fire retardant type chems or such. She went down (blue/ lack of O2) several times, almost like an asthmatic person. I did have her scoped and vet was surprised as her flaps weren't as bad as the symptoms presented. As it progressed, she'd go down w/ mere excitement of me coming home or a visitor coming over. Her rear weakened, and she got incontinent. I did not do the tie back surgery but her 13.5 yr summer, I did the kind thing and let her go. There was no way I was going to go thru another 100+F summer w/ her as that was truly the worst.
From the time she was obviously symptomatic, I found out about cholodin supplements and to this day, put my Sr Citizens on that by ~age 10. So far, so good. I am sure Mata (13.5) has a touch of LP but really, she is doing great for a dog whose been thru heat stroke, numerous 2nd hand poisonings (don't ask.. good grief she "greyed" me there for a few yrs!). etc. I buy Cholodin thru HealthyPets.com. Best of luck.
PS I do believe the genetic component is there but the Cholodin has helped for sure. A friend also has been thru it and it affected a few gens for sure.

I have never heard of cholodin supplements. What does it do?
It's a neurological supplement. Dietary Supplements - MVP Labratories Inc.
There are quite a few online blogs/articles if you google.
