    Panosteitis ugh.

My 18 week old male puppy started to limp left front last week. Then the next day it was more pronounced so I took him to Vet and he also agreed with was LF. The lameness has moved to the RF and he’s very sore, even with rimadyl. We went back to Vet last night and X-ray confirmed pano in the humerus bone. He is definitely dull and feeling crappy, which Vet said it pretty normal and warned me that he may even have a fever at times. We did blood to check for tick things as well as a CBC and Chem which were all in normal ranges. We are continuing the meds and adjusting the diet and resting. Of course, I am now totally freaked out that he has ED. Someone talk me down. Please.

Awww, poor pup and poor you! Kimber had limping episodes off and on at 4-6 months of age. We never got official x-rays but the vet said it was probably puppy pano. We'd (try to) rest her for a few days when she got gimpy, but she was a hyper dog. It stopped on its own and she had a healthy and active life for years.

Good thoughts that it's just pano.

Molly had this really badly in her hip for several months and then it just disappeared. I hope your baby grows out of it too.

Thanks. My vet is really wonderful and knows I’m traumatized because I lost my soulmate dog a few months ago. We though he just had some disc pain, but the pain kept spreading and it wasn’t responding to any of the meds. He went downhill really quickly and dog things are a bit raw for me right now.

He said he’d call to check in with me tomorrow. I’m going to ask him how long we give this exactly (assuming it stays in this leg, doesn’t lessen etc) before we further investigate.

    This really sucks .

Have you looked into natural alternatives to help strengthen/boost his immune system? Wishing you and your pup all the very best!

Sorry about the recent loss of your heart-dog .

Why would you be freaked out that he has ED when the x ray confirmed Pano? I would be relieved!

What do you mean, how long we give this exactly? Before you investigate what? You have confirmed Pano, it takes time to resolve, and may even recur (months later!), in the same leg, or even another leg, or all 4. It can get worse, or resolve pretty quickly, but you need to be patient, it's not like you can do anything to make it go away. Some people say lowering the quality of the dog food one level will help, others say an NSAID will help keep them comfortable if they are in pain. Soft cushy beds, and no forced exercise (which he shouldn't be doing at this age anyways) and lots of rest, may or may not help, but won't hurt.

No matter what happens, at least it Pano's not heritable, and it will resolve with no permanent damage.

Shelley, I’m too unsavvy to figure out how to reply with quotes, but I guess I’m just anxious and still traumatized over the loss of my black male over something that appeared initially as something so minor and treatable. I also made the mistake of googling pano to learn more about it and came across all these horror stories of pups that were initially diagnosed with pano, but really ended up having ED. (I know, I know, google is the worst). I am relieved to a point, but I’d be even more relieved if the pain meds seemed to make more of a difference. I’ll bring my concerns up with my vet when he calls me today.

My guy is 12 weeks post op for bi-lateral ED surgery. Hopefully your diagnosis of pano sticks.

I replied to your other post on insurance. I'm not sure if you are aware but any preexisting conditions will be excluded on any new policy. I would be very hesitant to make any changes right now because if you do go with a new company when they review the notes on the leg pain, they may deem a new diagnosis as pre-existing. So if this vet says pano, you change insurance companies, then a new diagnosis comes in with the new company -- it may not be covered. Just be cautious. Hopefully I make sense!

    Good luck with your pup.

Yes thank you. I had kinda already figured it may not be wise to switch now. The other company just irked me because I wanted to add wellness for things like Hw meds and routine stuff. Womp womp. Can I send you a pm?
