Thank you all for your kind words and stories! I am feeling pretty optimistic, and will report back after the surgery next week.

I am so sorry to hear about the diagnosis. I have no experience, but there was a member here, I think she was called Marmot. She had a Lab with reoccuring MCTs, maybe pm her.
Best wishes for a successful surgery and speedy recovery!

No experience, but sending good thoughts
Good thoughts for Archie's surgery.
Good luck on the surgery - you will know more after that. The information you will need is Grade (how quickly the cells are dividing) and Stage (how far into the body it has spread). The lower on both, the better. Grade 1, even some grade 2 tumors that are caught before they can spread (so still Stage 1) have a very good prognosis if wide margins have been achieved. Jolie had a Grade 2 removed from her flank shortly after we got her (she was 12). She died 2.5 years later of something unrelated. A friend had a Doberman with a mast cell removed 3 years ago (don’t know the grade) and it is still going strong.
One thing to watch out for with getting one this relatively young though is that even if this one is removed fully and successfully, he may be prone to getting more, so you will want to keep a very close eye on him and do frequent lump checks.

My Mia is 10.5 years old and is 3 years status post surgery (October 20th) to remove an MCT with a Huge flank incision, and good margins.
The Mitotic index was really low, and we got great margins, so we did not do any other treatments such as chemo. She has a (small) recurrence on the superior margin of the incision, and a few other lumps and bumps. At this point, due to her age, and so many, and they aren't hindering her, we decided not to chase them and remove them all. Once you "wake the beast" so to speak, MCT's can recur, and it seems like the more you remove, twice as many come back. She has a great attitude, eats well, drinks, (pees and poops on schedule) plays, has fun and disciplines the puppies, hahaha so life is good for her right now.
They Vet should have you put him on Benadryl since MCT's are Histamine reactive, Mia's tumor even shrunk a little before surgery with the Benadryl on board, and it calms it down. 1 mg/per lb is the standard dosage for an allergic reaction, although twice that much is used for a severe allergic reaction, so double check the dosage with the vet, to see what they want you to give him, the sooner you start the better.
Good thoughts for a wide margin and low Mitotic index!
My girl Fannie was diagnosed with a MCT when she was 15. She had multiple lipoma's removed over her lifetime, so when a lump appear in her left armpit my vet said to keep an eye on it and bring her in if it got any bigger. A month later it was getting bigger and pretty ugly looking. MY vet excised the tumor and the margins were clear. The tumor came back in the same area 6 months later. Fannie lived a good long life.
We'll keep Archie in our prayers and hope they get all of the tumor and he lives a nice, long life.
Thanks, everyone. Archie's surgery went well. The vet said the tumor was "enclosed" and not very big, and she was able to get large margins. They did a chest x-ray while he was under and didn't see anything else. They did notice some bloat in his stomach, though, which -- I'm not sure what that means!
She does have him on Benadryl twice a day right now, as well as Tramadol. I'm not sure the Tramadol agrees with him, he seems to be crying and anxious. We see her next week, so I will be able to ask about the long-term use of Benadryl, and of course find out what pathology says. I really appreciate all the stories and well wishes!
