    Acupuncture

Anyone have experience with acupuncture for their pup? I have an appointment for Asher on Thursday. The vet is a holistic vet that practices alternative treatments. I'm interested in acupuncture, chiropractic work, and laser therapy for Asher. We take off for the Outer Banks Thurs PM for 10 days. I was happy to get him in before we leave.

Opal has had all 3 treatments done. As long as Asher can lay or stand still for about 15 minutes, he'll do fine.
Good luck with Asher and his new adventure treatments.

My previous dog had a few treatments. I can’t say if it helped or not because In the end we believe he had some form of spinal cancer, but I will say he seemed to enjoy the treatments. My vet clinic really believes in it, especially for disc disease.

Scully had acupuncture as an adjunct to NSAIDS for her severely arthritic elbows for the last few years of her life. I can’t swear it helped her that much, but it certainly didn’t hurt and she loved getting it done. She was pretty stoic so it was hard to tell a difference in her pain levels. It certainly wasn’t a cure, but might have lessened the pain.

Chloe has had laser off and on quite a bit for the last year or two for soreness in her back and hip area, which we can’t be sure but we think is mostly muscular due to her gait being slightly out of balance due to her bad leg. That DEFINITELY works. The difference is night and day between before and after treatment. Can’t swear it would be as effective on arthritis (she may have some but it’s not the real problem), but would certainly help on any associated muscular issues. No one was offering it back when we had Scully or we would have tried it on her, too. Chloe’s rehab vet uses both (along with other things) depending on the diagnosis.

I’ve never done chiropractic on my dogs (other than by accident - once when giving Chloe a massage as instructed by her rehab vet I think I accidentally adjusted her, LOL - vet later said it was very possible - and it certainly helped her). I do know quite a few people in various dog sport who have their dogs adjusted regularly, but again, I think the effectiveness depends on what all is wrong.

We haven't had acupuncture, I hope it makes a difference for Asher. Our regular vet said it might help Lark's tendonitis but the rehab vet went with cold laser instead which did seem to speed her recovery. Have a great trip to our favorite locale, a lovely Thanksgiving, and let us know how the acupuncture seems to work.

Thank you for sharing. Encouraging news on laser. Since Asher adjusts his walk to accommodate the arthritic pain, it has crossed my mind that it may put his back out of whack. Not sure. I'm willing to try anything for him. I'd like to get him set up for weekly appointments for any / all of those options if the vet feels it will be helpful.

Thank you Smartrock -- we can't wait to have Thanksgiving at the beach. I can't wait to take the boys over to the Canadian Hole so they can frolic in the sound.

I did it for my previous dog, Sprocket. We mostly did it to help her healing after each of her TPLO surgeries. She was always super nervous at the vet, but after he put the needles in her, she fell asleep each time. Pretty interesting stuff! I do believe it helped.

Bandit had laser therapy for a degenerative disk in his neck. That worked wonders and the issue did not return. Rosie had acupuncture of what we thought was degenerative issues in her spine. It helped somewhat, but then we found out it was cancer.

Acupuncture addresses Oban's bad leg and his gut issues. For the gut all I can say is, he seems to have no more issues. For the leg he will actually be a bit more sore right away, which is typical, but markedly better the next day. Cold laser is very impressive on his leg, immediate improvement. Acupuncture helped me years ago with a sore neck and my Vet is really happy with how it's treating incontinence in a few male and female doggie patients.

Awesome to hear the positive feedback. I sure hope the fidigity boy will stay still long enough for treatment. He loves the heat therapy I give him now.
