I can't tell for sure if that kind of application would be toxic but I do know that peppermint oil (and many other oils) can aggravate nasal passages.
Hi all,
I’ve read that peppermint is toxic to dogs. My roommates are using peppermint essential oils to try to get rid of fruit flies and I’m worried it might hurt my lab Milo through exposure, because I’ve heard that essential oils can cause problems. We’re just using a few drops of the oil on a cotton ball in a few places around the house, and Milo and I are sleeping in a different room. Anyone have experience with this? Is it okay just for a night? I’m not actually applying the oil to his skin, but you can kind of smell it in the house (so, obviously, he can smell it better than I can). Any suggestions?

Well, I'd suggest there are some non-toxic and "natural" ways to attract and trap fruit flies that do not involve essential oils, such as apple cider vinegar, over-ripe fruit, and other things. Maybe a different, less questionable approach would be acceptable to your roommate. How to Make a Homemade Fruit Fly Trap | Taste of Home
Peppermint is not toxic to dogs, but it's important not to give your pup too much of it. Too much peppermint can give your dog an upset stomach or diarrhea. The biggest issue with mint isn't the plant itself, but the foods that contain mint flavoring. Peppermint is often combined with sweeteners, like Xylitol, which is very toxic to dogs.
I would suggest going out and purchasing your mates a bottle of lemongrass oil. Works well with fruit flies and pup safe. I use it all the time. Lavender as well.
Good to hear your dog is still alive after the "bloat"/eating whatever. I am sorry though you still haven't sorted out the things with your roommate.
