I had a boy, Ben, that I purchased from a breeder long ago, and he had ED, HD, all kinds of allergies, he was a mess. Anyways, we did surgery on his elbows, did Adequan injections and a lot of supplements and pain medications to keep him comfortable. Interestingly enough, he was neutered at the same time as his bilateral elbow surgery, but I lost him before he was 7 years old to a very aggressive prostate cancer.
Ben did pretty well after surgery, he limped still, but we kept his pain under control. We also were told to keep him moderately active, the enemy of arthritis is inactivity. So keep him moving, lots of walks, but no jumping, and butt tucking if you can help it. Bone cysts, really interesting, is there a way to share the scan? At least they aren't considered cancerous. https://cal.vet.upenn.edu/projects/sa..._52/52mast.htm

I assume that you have kept Asher's breeder in the loop? I would want to know what is happening, even though ED is factorial, and not aways genetic, but if there is a trend, it would affect my decision on future generations. I would also want to assist and support my puppy family any way I could.

My thoughts are with you and Asher.
Thank you! Sorry to hear you lost Ben at a young age. Thankfully Asher doesn't show signs of any other issues. I don't have a copy of the scan but I'm sure since I paid a high price for it I can request they email me a copy. When the surgeon called Friday I was walking out of work so I didn't have a pen. Sure wish I could remember the technical term of the bone cysts/condition he stated Asher had. Cysts are tearing through the cartilage as well. Surgeon advised of light hydrotherapy exercise and limited walking. He said 2-3 hydrotherapy sessions a week, daily massage and stretching, and heat/cold therapy is critical. I'm thinking of ordering a game day ice machine. Would love to find a place to rent one to try. I am using capsaisin on his elbows too. This was on the recommendation of his therapist that does his acupuncture.

I sure did inform the breeder, she was very upset and sent me money back. I hesitated to accept but I did. She's never had a pup have ED before. She's had mild HD in a line but never ED. It was actually the fathers last litter too. She has a page on FB and when I see people post pictures of Asher litter-mates I'm always wondering why me out of the 11? Then I tell myself to get a grip because I'd never trade this boy for anything and we are blessed to have each other. He is the sweetest boy and just wants to please.

Here's a good article on elbow replacement. I very much hope I can keep him going for a few years. https://biomedtrix.com/total-elbow-replacement/

It was in the article you sent.....subchondral bone cysts.

I am so sorry to hear this. I have also thrown myself the ED pity Party. It just plain sucks. He is so lucky to have such a devoted Momma!!! I know you’ll do anything you can to keep him comfy. Sending hugs to both of you.

If they are saying bone cysts, this is probably a little out of the ordinary. Not one of the regular forms of elbow dysplasia. Its good the breeder rectified it in some way. There's not much they can do other than offer money back. You will just have to manage the best you can, and fortunately the dog, while in pain, they don't live their lives like us, they'll enjoy each day and all the things you can do with them. And then any therapy afterwards is still bonding time. Grizz has a bad arthritis elbow. He was nuetered due to ED, interestingly, NOT the elbow he has arthritis in. Pain pills don't help. We just manage each day.

So sorry to read this update on Samson, but I'm happy to know that he's still happy. It's what matters the most in the end, and that you can make peace with that fact that you're doing the best you can for him.

That looks very invasive. I don’t know if I’d do it. Probably not.

I’m attaching the x-rays of Cookie’s elbow. It shows final-stage arthritis. Apart from the flare-ups, he is fine. He goes for walks, he runs from time to time, he hikes, he swims. I won’t tell you what to do. It’s not my part. However, I can tell you that a dog can be happy with a slight limp most of the time.

From what the surgeon said, the bone cysts are eating through the joint and ruining the structure and cartilage.

Yes, I would think this is different than end-stage arthritis, where the joint essentially ends up fused. That happened to Chloe and is actually less painful than earlier in the progression because without the excess movement, you don’t have as much pain. Bone cysts eat away at the bone so I would think would have a completely different progression and end-stage. Very sorry your boy is dealing with this & wish I had some advice to give.

Thanks everyone. Your well wishes mean a lot!!!

Yes, the end-stage for his condition is something that I never want to have to consider. I have hope that Dr. Loic Dejardin will be able to help him. We have an appointment at 0915 on 1/21. I'm thinking about driving over on Sunday night. I'd like to take Samson. He can stay in the car while I go inside with Asher --- I figure I'd be in there 30 minutes? I dunno. They will do CT scans which doesn't require me. To go over the scan would take 15-20 minutes? Thoughts on Samson tagging along? Am I asking too much of him to sit in the car? He LOVES to travel and hang out in the back of the Explorer. I have his memory foam mattress in the back. If he doesn't go, I'll drive over Monday morning and right back. I'd have someone come and let him out and visit for a little while. I really think he'd prefer to ride along (3.5 hr drive one way).
