    Chocolate Lab Hair Color

Brody is a 14 month old chocolate lab. I'm noticing a change in the color of his fur. It's turning golden especially along his back. I wanted to know if this is just perhaps the sun lightening it up or if there is some other issue I should be concerned with. Also, his hair is not flat an smooth like what I think I in typical labs but rather it is more fluffy. Is that normal as well? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Sounds like the sun is bleaching it out, which is very common. As far as the coat, labs should typically have a thicker coat. I'm not sure what you mean by "fluffy". When I think of that word, I think of a chow chow or a keeshond. Some Labs have a thinner coat without an undercoat or without much of one. Their hair sits much more like a doberman, boxer, or other "slick-coated" breed, but typically with longer hair. That is not a breed standard Lab coat, but perhaps it may be coat type that you are used to seeing?

Thanks for your reply. I couldn't figure out how to attach a pic so I change my profile picture to show you the color variation that's happening with his hair. Does this look like sun bleaching?

You need to have more posts before you are allowed to put up a photo. Spam prevention. The sun can really bleach a chocolate's coat.

We have 3 chocolates and each reacts differently to the sun, Ginger is the only one with lighter areas on her tail and head

When they are shedding the dead hair coming out will change color. Just like in a black, the hair almost looks choc. Or it is sun bleach.

Could possibly be sun bleaching as long as the coat is healthy. Also, when shedding, the undercoat will have a lighter appearance. Bandit and Potion, who were black, got a mahogany hue when they were shedding.

And the funky colors that chocolates can turn when they're shedding is why I will never own one.
