Oh boy. But it seems things have improved so hope this trend continues. It would sure be nice to know the cause, so you can avoid it in future. I was thinking bug bites too. The tiniest spider, gulped down, would have Jet barfing soon. None of the other symptoms though, not for her.

Text from husband this morning says normal poop and no overnight vomiting. Yay! Now my fear is that he'll feel better today but the vet still wants to keep him quiet for a total of 3 days. You try keeping a 10 month old lab puppy quiet! I guess the benadryl will help.

Now I'm left to wonder what it is that set him off. Vet said it could have been a bug (spider, ants, etc) or just something in the air or grass. The way she described it is that he could have a sensitivity to something in his day to day life, but not enough that it would show symptoms. If he was exposed to something else, even if not a significant trigger, it could be enough to show symptoms. This could just be a one-off issue like a spider, but if he has another reaction we could start doing some elimination testing to figure out if there is something in his normal routine that might heighten his sensitivity.

Oh dear...just seeing this..I hope your pup is feeling better.

These things can be so scary. We never want to see our puppies sick.

Labs can surely get into everything and anything!

Glad to hear he's feeling better....let's hope it's a one-off. Dan is sensitive to a lot of things...we got the same explanation of "one thing too many" one time. We haven't had any major problems but I'm careful to start things slowly (no "loading dose" for these guys) and have had to avoid certain things altogether (e.g., turmeric, flaxseed, taurine/supplement).

My last lab, Sprocket, had three incidents in her life where something triggered an allergic reaction that caused her whole head to swell up like a shar pei and her front legs too. After the first major panic and rush to the ER where she got a shot of epinephrine, I always kept Benadryl on hand. We never figured out what caused the incidents though. All three were uniquely different circumstances and several years apart. Two in the summer, one in the snowy winter. But all three happened right after being outside in the woods. I always suspected an insect bite, but my vet tended to think it was a plant reaction. Anyway it’s scary and unnerving and I hope your pup feels better soon. I also hope you figure out what caused it.

Aaaaaaand his fecal came back positive for giardia. Allergies, ear infection, and giardia. For a dog who has been a perfect picture of health so far he sure chose to pile it all on at once!

Well, hopefully you get it all over at once, too, if you want to look at it like that. Just think how much better he's going to feel when you didn't know anything was going on!

Yep! I have a feeling Barley is going to be the dog where we appreciate having insurance. Since we brought him home he want to jump and pounce and climb on things and do all the things lab puppies should not be doing at that age for joint health. He's also so sneaky with that mouth. Combined with his bold and fearless personality I'm certain we'll run into trouble somewhere no matter how well we supervise!

I remember having this discussion with my husband when the breeder recommended matching him to us. I told him Barley would be a handful compared to Thor!
