Asher ED - Chapter 1 Final Update

It's time to close out chapter 1 of Asher's ED. OSU never called me back so I reached out to his surgeon in Akron. He requested the CT scan and received it this morning. Dr. Daye called me as I was leaving work. He said that all of the bone cysts are generally in horses and not dogs. He said there are not enough cases in dogs to understand why they are occurring. The joint will continue to deteriorate. There is nothing more he can do for Asher and he referred me to Michigan State Univ for a complete joint replacement. He said an osteonomy would just be a band aid. Dr. Daye wants me to manage conservatively for as long as possible. He also stated that is what MSU will do as well. They do not jump into this surgery due to complications. I'll make an appointment for after the first of the year so they can evaluate the boy. Dr. Loic Dejardin and our adventure to MSU......will be the next chapter for Asher and his ED.

I wanted to just cry as I was walking out of work. Just takes the energy of me! It'll be okay though! He's happy......that makes me happy.

Im so sorry to read this. I guess the one major good thing is he is happy. I also know you will do whatever you can to help him.

I found these while I was searching for something to keep Cookie's elbows warm since cold weather triggers flare-ups in his arthritic elbow. I ordered it for Cookie but it hasn't arrived yet so I haven't tried it, but maybe it could help if you decide to manage the condition conservatively.

It says "knee" but it's obviously for the elbow.

I am really sorry to hear the news, I really feel for you. We've been fighting arthritis for more than 3 years now and it's a constant struggle, a roller-coaster. I am certain though you will give him the best quality of life possible and that Asher is and will be a very happy dog for years to come.

Asher is lucky to have you. And vice versa.

I am really sorry about Asher.

I had a boy, Ben, that I purchased from a breeder long ago, and he had ED, HD, all kinds of allergies, he was a mess. Anyways, we did surgery on his elbows, did Adequan injections and a lot of supplements and pain medications to keep him comfortable. Interestingly enough, he was neutered at the same time as his bilateral elbow surgery, but I lost him before he was 7 years old to a very aggressive prostate cancer.
Ben did pretty well after surgery, he limped still, but we kept his pain under control. We also were told to keep him moderately active, the enemy of arthritis is inactivity. So keep him moving, lots of walks, but no jumping, and butt tucking if you can help it. Bone cysts, really interesting, is there a way to share the scan? At least they aren't considered cancerous. https://cal.vet.upenn.edu/projects/sa..._52/52mast.htm

I assume that you have kept Asher's breeder in the loop? I would want to know what is happening, even though ED is factorial, and not aways genetic, but if there is a trend, it would affect my decision on future generations. I would also want to assist and support my puppy family any way I could.

My thoughts are with you and Asher.

Yes this!!! It is very important! The best would be shorter, but more frequent walks, and definitely activity moderation.

Thank you! I will definitely be doing conservative management for as long as possible. Right now, the life of the TER joint replacement is 7 years. At the 7 yr mark for the pup, it was metal on metal. I have a lot of researching to do!
