Kimber's been on a small dose of daily Rimadyl since her spinal injury two years ago. As many of you know, dogs- esp labs- can have liver damage on this medication. We had her six-month blood work done today and happily, everything came back clean!

That is wonderful news! How did Kimber injure her spine, if you don't mind me asking?

Awesome! It's a good med, I am just very cautious about it since Potion did have a liver reaction.
great news!
So thrilled to hear! Great News!

Good news for you and Kimber!
Thanks for asking! On a very, very hot day in June 2012, I was playing fetch with Kimber. The ball went into the tall grass and she ran in to get it- and a second later there was horrible screaming and my poor baby dragged herself out of the grass and towards me with her front paws, her back end useless. We rushed her to the e-vet, who thought it was heat stroke but when she didn't get better, they did all kinds of x-rays. No disc injury was visible, and they were stumped. Luckily, we live very close to the Virginia Tech Vet school, and they were able to admit her a couple of days later. The MRI machine was offline but they did some contrast films on her and were able to eliminate anything that had a surgical solution, and by process of elimination said it was either a FCE (spinal stroke) or a spinal bruise. Since both are treated with rehab, so getting a definitive diagnosis wasn't worth the $3000 the MRI would cost.
As soon as she was released from the hospital, we started working with a great rehab vet in the area. Within a couple of weeks she was hobbling along in a sling, and thanks to access to a swimming pool for water therapy, she was soon walking unaided. She's about 80% where she was pre-injury; she can walk and run with a noticeable limp. About once a month she goes to a doggie chiropractor for an adjustment and acupuncture, and that seems to help a lot.
Because she still has pain issues, the rehab vet thinks it was a spinal injury rather than stroke. Her backbone probably hit her spine, bruised it, and then went back into place. Kimber was your usual lab and played rough her entire life; she jumped off hte dog walk in agility; took a really hard fall chasing deer; etc. The vet said any old injury could've primed her backbone to move, and during fetch that day she might have tweaked herself in just the wrong way.
We've tried a couple of times taking her off the daily rimadyl but she's obviously in pain. On Rimadyl, she's happy. We know there are risks to the medication, but it makes such a huge difference in her quality of life, we take our chances.
tl;dr version: She probably bruised her spine.
