    Laryngitis...

Our family was away on a family vacation, and while we were away both dogs were kenneled, where they usually stay on the very odd occasion that we all can get away together. We returned home on February 24th and needless to say the dogs were as happy to see us as we were to see them. Since we have been home I had noticed that Cooper's bark sounded off, I can't really explain how, but didn't sound like him. It wasn't all the time, just occasionally, and I didn't mention it to anyone else until today when we heard him growl, and again the pitch was off....higher than what is usual for him. My daughter was home and I mentioned it to her and she agreed and also stated his bark isn't his normal sound. I am wondering if he has Laryngitis from being at the kennel and possibly barking more than normal?? The only other thing I have noticed is after he has eaten, on a few occasions, he is coughing and coughs up a kibble or two....like his throat is irritated. Otherwise he seems fine, no cough or signs he is ill....Anyone else have any experience with this??

Both of mine have sensitive throats (react to bitey face, irritation from sugar granules/homeopathic supps, dust/grass pollen), so we have times when the throat is definitely irritated.

Both of mine have fits of barking for one reason or another and, lots of times, their barks following shortly thereafter will be weird.

So that could absolutely be normal when viewed through my eyes.

But since they were kenneled, I'd be keeping my eyes/ears open in case it's indicative of something like Kennel Cough (or coincidental onset of something like LP, especially if Cooper is a leash puller when being walked and the walker allowed that).

Hope he's just got something in common with mine.

I would think a dog could get laryngitis from excessive barking. When we take or pick up our dogs from the kennel there are always dogs barking. I haven't noticed our dogs sounding different but they don't bark a lot at home and it hasn't been reported that they bark a lot at the kennel. They do bark but not excessively. Is Cooper usually a big barker, barking at people or dogs on walks or when they go past your house or yard? Barking at squirrels or other animals? You could ask the kennel if he was barking a lot while you were gone, if they still remember, it has only been a few days. Has it been getting any better? Could he have gotten something stuck in his throat that has caused a little swelling?

I agree...it could definitely be from excessive barking at the kennel. Some dogs may be stressed there and when they start barking, the others will chime in.

But the coughing would concern me...he may have contacted Kennel Cough.

I’m not really familiar with LP and would have to look it up... Cooper is my first dog and all of this is unknown to me...and makes me very appreciative of this forum
Cooper has unfortunately had kennel cough before and this is different... he doesn’t cough all the time, but appears to
“cough” after eating occasionally, and maybe it isn’t a cough, but like he is clearing his throat and kibble will come up.
He isn’t a big barker at home, just warns us if someone shows up in the laneway, but I am sure at the kennel he would follow suit if others were barking. I can message the kennel and see. He doesn’t appear to be in any distress or bothered by it at all. I’ll keep an eye on it and if it doesn’t settle will call the Vet.

Coughing can also indicate an enlarged heart but I don't think that would happen overnight. Even if they were vaccinated for kennel cough, they can still get it.

I wouldn't be too concerned about heard disease or LP from what you have said. Most likely either an irritated throat from too much barking or the beginnings of kennel cough. Keep an eye on him, and keep him apart from other dogs just in case it progresses into kennel cough (which is like a cold in humans so can start with a sore throat).

He has sounded fine for the past few days...the horseless isn't noticeable at all while barkin or growling (not that he does it frequently lol), so I am assuming he had just irritated his throat while at the kennel. He isn't coughing, so no worries about kennel cough. On another note....my daughter found a lump on his left leg (what I will call his thigh) while petting him last night. It's pea or marble sized and doesn't seem to bother him when I touch it. I already have an appointment with the vet for bloodwork (routine) next week and will have it looked at....
