    Gabby...tooth extractions...bone graft?!

Hi all...it's been a while, but I'm back. So Miss Gabby was at the vet yesterday, and we had noticed she had a couple of teeth that looked a bit "off". Diagnosis: 1 fractured 4th upper premolar (large chip on the 1 on the other side, too), and a broken maxillary 3rd incisor, with pulp showing. The vet is recommending a bone graft for the fractured carnassial tooth, and we don't find a lot of info that supports that. So, my question is basically this: has anyone had experience with bone grafting after tooth extractions?

She also has a small skin tag by her snout that is included in the cost estimate of...ta da...$1300-1800.

Fortunately, money isn't really the issue, I just want to make sure that we're doing exactly the right thing for Gabs! (Sadly, the power chewer will be getting no more raw beef marrow bones. That's going to be hard to explain to her.)

Chase had a carnassial tooth extracted but to my knowledge, there was no bone grafting. I'd have to look for Chase's dental work receipt to make sure there was no grafting done but it doesn't strike a familiar note. I myself had a bone graft after an extraction of a molar, however. But they said that was because I had to get an implant in that location and supposedly I needed more bone there. Sadly, no more raw marrow bones for me either.

Lol - you have my sympathy. I did read about the grafting in humans for implant follow-up. The grafting is only $120 overall, and the vet's explanation was that it's such a large tooth immediately under the eye socket, that it's better to have bone in there rather than a big indentation. Basically, I'm just nervous about all of it, so here I am.

    Gabby is so very pretty!

If she were my dog, I would most likely get a second opinion from a specialist.

I would also be nervous about a bone graft.

No idea but I hope it goes well. Poor girl, must have been sore and I bet she didn't show it.

I don't know much about dentistry, but I do know that we've just pulled molars when there have been fractures. What's the graft for?

The skin tag removal for over $1K??? I'd be interviewing new vets. I had another vet look at my Jack's ear awhile back, he had a small growth which I assumed to be benign, growing on the flap where it attaches to the ear. She quoted me $600-800 WITHOUT a biopsy, which she highly recommended, at an additional fee of $250. I decided to go see my regular vet. She quoted me $150, no biopsy needed, and she did it with a local.

I looked back at Chase's carnassial extraction post-op paperwork and it doesn't say anything about bone grafting so I don't think he had it. We went to a Dental Specialty practice and worked with a board certified veterinary dentist and oral surgeon. It was not our general vet. Prior to that surgery, he had some swelling under the eye on that side which I now believe to have been related to a tooth abscess, although at the time the general vet said she thought it was not related to his teeth. Because of the proximity of the tooth roots to the sinus cavity or whatever else is up at the tips of these 3 gigantic tooth roots, I can understand why bone grafting might be considered. I just don't think our dental vet did that as part of his extraction. I had no reason to get a second opinion unless I didn't like the cost enough to go to our general vet to see if they'd extract the tooth. It was costly.

Lark also broke off one of her top incisors, exposing pulp. That also got extracted. No grafting, pretty much the same recovery instructions as Chase.

The extraction recovery process was pretty uneventful, btw, once he was back to regular food. For the first 2 weeks I had to feed him food abut the consistency of pudding so I ground up kibble and mixed it with water or mixed canned food with water to get what might be called a slurry. Once healed up, you'd have never known there was an extraction.

I hope you get this figured out and things work out well for Gabby!

First of all, a BIG thank you for all your help and kind words. I've come to expect no less from this community. In hindsight, she has shown some very limited signs of pain, such as licking her snout where the incisor broke off. Other than that, in the vet's own words "well those bad teeth certainly haven't affected her love of eating". That being said, we know she has to be in some pain, and there's certainly some lab parent guilt on our part. After a more thorough review of the entire page of listed charges and some Googling of major tooth extractions, it's actually not too unreasonable for all of the work. The only big question I still have is regarding the necessity of the bone graft. She's scheduled for surgery on the 23rd, and I'll ask for more details on the graft then. Now we just wait...

I've never had to deal with anything like this, so no advice. Best wishes that all goes well for Miss Gabby!

Both Tootsie and Sarah have had to have molars removed but now bone graft. What is the reason for the bone graft? Coleman had to have skin tags removed for a couple hundred that price included sending out for testing. (of course that was several years ago) I agree maybe a second opinion with a doggie dentist. Keeping Gabby in our thoughts for a full recovery.
