    Induced Vomiting

Well, I had to pull out an at-home emergency procedure today.

We live on a rural property with lots of critters. I take the dogs walking (off leash) most days out our back gate on public lands. I focus most of my training and reinforcement on skills that are necessary for off leash behavior and 99% of the time I’m super proud of my boys. But today Barley blew it.

Lately we’ve had some duck nests scattered around the property and Thor is really good at sniffing them out and eating the eggs. So when we’ve been leaving the house I’ve been paying close attention to him since Barley doesn’t seem as interested.

This afternoon I was distracted while shooing Thor away from a potential nest site under a bush, when I looked up and Barley was staring at me from about 10 yards away with something in his mouth. I called him over and he obediently responded, and I thought he had a small snake. As he got closer I realized it looked more like a rodent tail.

I’ve been so proud of his “drop it” recently but OF COURSE today was the day it didn’t work. I told him to drop it and he stared me in the eye and took a big gulp. The tail disappeared. I had no idea what it was but it was too large for a mouse - most likely a sage rat.

We don’t use rat poison on our property but we don’t know about the neighbors. So I went into emergency mode. I hoped he had just found a tail left behind by a coyote or badger, but if he had swallowed a whole rat there was the possibility it could have been a dead (and potentially poisoned) rat. I had remembered reading about induced vomiting so I grabbed my phone and did a quick google search before dialing the vet.

Long story short (too late): 3 Tb of hydrogen peroxide administered via squirt bottle to the back of his throat led to vomiting up an entire rat carcass within 5 minutes of ingesting it. And a good reminder that no matter how solid the command there is always something that will take you back to the beginning.

He’s happy and bouncy and mostly just mad that he had to puke up his delicious treat. Keeping an eye on him per vet recommendations but he should be fine. Stinker.

Anyways, I wanted to share the induced vomiting [emoji2961] tips here since it worked for us and was recommended by my vet. 1 tsp of hydrogen peroxide per 10 lbs of weight, administered every 15 minutes until vomiting, but no more than 3 times. It irritates the stomach lining, but too much can cause damage. I administered 2tb initially (6 tsp for his 60 lbs) but he managed to spit some out. I squeezed in another Tb and about 5 minutes later he vomited.

Just saved that for future use....hope I never need it....thank you!

A whole rat. Ewwwww. And that doesn't even begin to describe my reaction. Memories are attached.

Baffle snarfed up something when I was distracted and I fished it out of his mouth. A dead, decomposing, mouse. I sure wasn't prepared for that and I cringe, just remembering. Nasty, stinky, slimy..... (you're welcome)

That would be pretty gross to see a whole dead rat reappear amidst the foam from the peroxide and whatever else was down there! I'm glad it was that "simple"!

I haven't had to dose Lark or Henry with peroxide but Chase was really bad about swallowing socks and I did have to de-sock him more than once. After struggling to get it down him without it going everywhere except down his throat, I discovered he'd drink it down voluntarily if I mixed it in a bit of milk in a bowl. Same fortuitous result: *HORK*-> sock!

    Glad the rat came back.

Could you ask around about who uses anti-coagulant rodenticide? I really don't know if the amount in one dead rat would also kill a Lab. But owls and other critters might eat that rat, and it could kill them.

Oh wow! That's crazy. I have that method posted on the inside of my cabinet and always keep peroxide on hand for that situation. So far, haven't had to use. Just yesterday Asher figured out how to pop the top of the trashcan off. Brand new too. I thought it was Asher proof. I got to him as the bacon grease saturated paper towel was headed down. I fished it out. Ugh, a rat. Nice work!!! These pups sure know how to keep us on our toes!

Glad it worked out! Had to do that to the yellows once when they were about a year old - someone (turned out to be Cookie) ate part of a whipped cream soaked towel while my daughter was in the shower but we didn't know which one. Chloe was in the clear since she had been downstairs with me the whole time but it could have been either of the other two. Phoned the vet to ask for advice and they recommended exactly what you did. Both girls puked a few minutes after the treatment but only Cookie puked towel. I felt bad for making Sass go through that when she was innocent all along!

Our immediate neighbors don't, but there is another neighborhood nearby that I don't know anything about. I don't know how far rodents travel, so I figured better safe than sorry. Plus I had *just* read an article about dead mountain lions being found in Southern California due to the amount of rat poison they had consumed via their prey.

Part of the fun of living in the country! Just last evening I watched a great horned owl swoop down and snag a mallard duck out of our irrigation pond. I'm looking out my office window right now at a coyote hunting gophers in our neighbor's pasture. Critters are so much fun, but the stupid sage rats are a pain. They get under my hood and eat the insulation out from my car, they dig in my garden, they eat all the berries off of my plants. Grrr.
