Exclamation 7 Month old puppy with chin acne

So my little girl Betty....... she's 7 months now has a mild rash on her belly that I've just started treating with medicated shampoo. I think it's getting better but my wife brought to my attention that she's got some pretty serious chin acne. I've seen her licking her belly like crazy and think that perhaps that the rash/irritation has spread to her chin.
I've searched and read everything i could find on it and have a couple ideas now... thanks guys btw... But I wanted to post a new thread about it to see if there are any new ideas or thoughts. I realize a vet visit is the best way to identify this issue but she's going in to be spayed in just under two weeks and i don't want her on any antibiotics, or anything that will keep her from being able to have her surgery. She had urinary issues already that have held up her being fixed already. that's why she's 7 months and still not fixed.
I found someone here said that powdered alfalfa worked wonders on her dog but i don't know how to apply it... or if it's applied.. maybe added to her food? Stridex pads? There are a few things i've read as i stated above but any input anyone could add would be greatly appreciated.
Betty doesn't seem to even notice this issue as far as we can tell but after pushing back her spaying twice now due to urinary issues, I really don't want to go back into the vet only to be told that i have to push it back again so she can get medicated for this issue. so any help would be greatly appreciated

    Welcome to the board.

Chin: Do you use plastic bowls for food/water? Plastic will cause acne. Stainless steel/glass/ceramic much better.

Belly: Could easily be urine scald...both of our females had this as puppies. Squatting = splashing. Wiping off with pet wet wipes should help keep that at bay once it's cleared up. To clear it up, I'd suggest a chlorhexiderm product.

Same rash: Not really all that common, but dogs can react as humans do to poison ivy. Any chance she's been in any? I've never had to treat this in a dog...if you suspect this could be it, ask your vet for a recommendation for what would be safe/effective to use.

The board slows down on weekends and holidays...and this one's a double whammy. Hopefully someone who's around will be able to add to this.

So I guess first I'd ask what her urinary issues are, even though that wasn't your question. I have no problem with her being 7 months old and not spayed and the breeders on here will probably weigh in on this, too. Some young females have what is called an inverted or hooded or recessed vulva. It's just a normal variant but these girls have more problems with urine being trapped around the vulva giving bacteria more of a chance to cause urinary tract infections. Rather than rushing to spay these female pups, it is often recommended that you actually wait until after they've experienced their first heat cycle, sometimes 2. With a heat cycle, there is some swelling of the vulva and it often stays a bit larger after the heat cycle is over and often the issues the pup had with UTIs go away or improve because the vulva is no longer recessed. It is suggested that some vets may not be too familiar with it or in the rush to spay, the pup gets spayed before the condition is really recognized. There is another surgery that can be done to remove the extra tissue around the vulva but if the condition can resolve naturally, it may be worth waiting. I don't know if recurrent UTIs are what you've been experiencing but if so, you may want to read up on that issue before rushing to spay little Miss Betty. I'll try to find an article or 2 to get you started.

As for the chin acne, one thing that can help if you are giving her food or water in plastic bowls is to switch to stainless steel or ceramic bowls and to wash her bowls regularly. Plastic bowls can get little scratches that can harbor bacteria and transfer it to her chin. My first lab had some chin acne and I tried Stridex pads and washed his chin a few times a day with some Hibiclens. I think he eventually ended up on antibiotics and then it never came back. My 2 most recent labs haven't had chin acne.

Let me see if I can find some info on the recessed vulva thing so you can see if it sounds like what Betty is experiencing.

    Welcome to the board.

FIRST, to echo Smartrock, if she has urinary issues please read up at the link provided above and consider delaying the spay for quite a while. Allowing her to go through one heat might be a very good idea. There's more info. on the risks and benefits of spay/neuter here:

Yes, plastic bowls can harbour bad bacteria and irritate the chin. Try stainless steel or glass or ceramic.

Her belly could be simply a case of new puppy tummy meeting new grasses. Eye goobers at this age are also common, for the same reason. Puppy's little system has to get used to wide world of pollen and bugs and prickly sand and stems. Not to say let her endure it but a mild treatment till she adjusts might help. Rinsing with a mix of ACV and water might do it. Worth a try before meds, if Vet agrees she's not too bad now. Note: don't use ACV on open sores, it stings like the dickens.

CAn we see a picture of Betty? Please?

well, my wife and I have different memory of this so she's had either 2 or 3 treatments for a UTI. the last one being a month on amoxicillin. However, she's been fine for the past 3 months or so. She does have a recessed vulva now that you say that. I got the impression that she kind of went into heat once so far. She had a handful of little accidents a couple weeks ago which my wife read is a symptom of her being in heat. So, it maybe a good idea to hold off on her spaying to see if it fixes itself?
As far as her chin acne, we run her and her sister at the tennis court... (a fenced in area) and she chases and retrieves tennis balls for exercise and fun. I did notice though that she sometimes may scrape her chin on the surface of the court. I'm guessing this will irritate the chin condition but wonder if it could be the cause too. Rubbing her chin on pavement?
thanks for the input... we are looking into this vulva of hers and deciding the right course of action.

This is the OP’s wife posting. Betty has had 3 treatments for recurring UTI’s but we give her cranberry and d-mannose support at meals which has seemed to help the issue.

She 100% has a recessed vulva! Thank you for all of the information! I had read that going through a heat cycle could help take care of the recurring UTIs issue but her vet told me that is not the case? She was littler then and perhaps her vulva issue was not as clear then? I will bring this up with her vet.

We really appreciate all of your support and input here.
