    Fractured tooth

Playing with Barley yesterday and I noticed something off with his teeth. Looks like one of his front lower teeth has a fracture. The bigger part is loose. It doesn't seem to bother him so no emergency vet appointment, but I was able to get in tomorrow (my vet is open 7 days a week, hurray).

I swear, this dog is why insurance exists. I've had insurance for Thor since the day we brought him home but he's never needed anything other than routine exams. Barley is so different - he keeps having these little things happen that add up! Allergic reactions, eating entire dead rats (yes, ew), running full speed into bushes. I know this is likely from his rough play. He goes HARD, so I won't do things like toss a ball unless we're on soft ground. He'll get so excited that he'll run full speed after the ball and face plant. The other day he was chasing Thor and ran straight into my shins, leaving a huge bruise on me but he didn't even pause to shake it off.

Good thing our vet likes him - they even featured him on their instagram/facebook page recently.

I feel your pain. My vet calls Lido a "frequent flyer"...

Ugh, Lark broke off an upper tooth, the larger one just above the one Barley appears to have cracked. These dogs don’t even act like anything hurts although you and I might be loading up on ibuprofen or something for a crack like that and no hot or cold beverages! I hope Barley gets fixed up quickly and is on to his next adventure!

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Any idea what might have caused it?

Do you give him bones/antlers/bully sticks? That would be my first guess.

Is he a fetching fool...any chance someone threw a hard ball for him to catch?

Does he take rocks into his mouth?

Looks like a candidate for pulling to me. At least it doesn't seem to be hurting him.

Sophie has a similar break in a front tooth like that. Vet wasn't concerned. She also has a crack in a canine tooth, again the vet wasn't concerned. Both have been this was for at least 4 years, and it doesn't seem to bother her at all.

I've brushed his teeth since his last hard treat and didn't see anything wrong, so I think it probably happened while playing. He'll face plant when fetching, he'll hit Thor hard when playing bitey face, etc. This dog is either at 0% or 120% and although he's not clumsy I'm always worried he'll do something stupid to hurt himself. I try to mitigate it as much as possible (only playing on soft surfaces, tossing soft balls, etc) but labs will be labs... The other day they started wrestling hard on the wood floors and I had to shoo them into a carpeted room. I try not to let them do that on hard surfaces.

Mata broke an incisor years ago when she crashed a jump in agility. I think her face planted on the bar. It never bothered her though I had the base of it removed later while under anesthesia for something else. I will say that by removing the base, her bite changed so I'm not sure I'd do that again.

Yikes. They can be pretty stoic and not show pain. But I think a hurting tooth would make them drool. At any rate, against the Vet's urging, I left both of Jet's in. They weren't fractured, that we could see, but badly discoloured and looking dead.

I can see that is has separated more now, although it still doesn't seem to be bothering him (no extra licking, panting, or drooling). Still, I'm glad that I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow. It's just a small sliver that still seems to be left intact, so I'm guessing the vet will pull the loose part out (if it hasn't fallen out by tomorrow) but we'll see about the remaining piece.
