i put a dog bootie on chili's paw when he had cracked pad with some neosporin. whatever you decide to do, keep it dry/no licks.

Our vets have recommended against anything other than the original plastic cone....especially for neutering surgery....they'd seen way too many instances of dogs working their way around/through softer cones and requiring corrective action. Some dogs may not need something that protective (Diggity looks resigned to obey) but a lot of them do.
yes, I really like this cone. I used it for my previous dog and it kept her from licking areas that I wanted to keep away from her. Diggity is surprisingly okay with it on. I mostly use it at night and put it on him when I crate him for the night. I do hear it banging around and hitting the side of the crate as he change positions at night, but it doesn’t seem to bother him. I also put it on during the day if I can’t watch him or right after I apply the meds to his sore. I have a clear hard plastic cone too, but I find those much more unwieldy and bothersome for the dog. Someone told me this one is too small for him, but it seems to be working just fine. I cannot remember where I got it because it was so long ago, but this is the same one on Chewy:
