My vet told me about this because Brandy has allergies. Hers are not bad enough to need it though, her herbs and homeopaths are working for her. My vet did say that it doesn't have the same negative side effects that Pred and Atopica do, but I don't know anymore than that about it. My vet also told me it was in short supply, so she didn't put on her sign that she has it yet, and she can only get it for her severe clients that were already taking it. If I had a dog with bad allergies, I'd probably give it a try.
Bo's derm vet put him on Apoquel in January when we also started immunotherapy drops. It has helped him tremendously. No negative side effects. While I was reluctant to use something so new, he wasn't getting relief with anything else. He still gets the "itchies" but not to the point where he chews himself up causing all the secondary issues he was experiencing. Due to the shortage, the derm vet can only give me a one month supply at a time. Bo's regular vet can't even get his hands on it.
For you using Apoquel - Does Apoquel make your dog fart? If you have exerience with Atopica as well do they smell as bad as Atopica farts?
I'm only partly kidding. "Half joke, whole earnest" as my Mum says.
Thought I would share a part of a email exchange between my derm vet & nurse and me: Looks like they prefer to keep Corbin on Atopica versus Apoquel for number of reasons.
"regarding the apoquel, the general feeling is to keep dogs on atopica if they are doing well rather than change to apoquel, as apoquel is new and there's no track records yet regarding cancer, etc. this is especially true for corbin as he is on such a low dose of atopica. as apoquel is around longer now and more info is known about it, it is worth considering changing due to cost savings. we've had good success with apoquel at the twice daily dosing, not so good once they go down to once daily. however, it's still on restricted supply so we haven't been able to start any new patients on it yet, we only have enough in stock right now to refill for those patients already on it. as long as the ears heal and the skin/itch remain good, there's no need to recheck him (Corbin) until the fall.
