PLEASE HELP ASAP!!! Vinny swallowed something he shouldn't have, do I make him throw up???

    Hey guys,

My 2 y/o black lab Vinny just swallowed a 2.5 ft fuzzy rope. My boyfriend gave him an old toy with long dangling legs on it (it was thrown into the toybox for how easy he was destroying it...). I was cooking and told him "You'd better watch him with that because I'm at the stove and he is going to eat it." He stepped away for 5 minutes. Then, I hear a gagging noise. I run to check on Vinny and he's fine but one of the long, fuzzy legs of the toy is gone. I am sure he managed to swallow it.

Do I make him throw this up?? Do I wait? The vet is closed so I cannot call.

Call an emergency vet, even if its in another nearby town. They can advise you best. I wouldn't wait

I didn't even think of calling the emergency vet since I was panicking and all I could think was "Our vet is closed!" Grateful to the lab board for being my voice of reason while in panic mode.

Since he's a big boy and the fuzzy rope was thin, soft, and flexible, we're going to wait and see if it comes out on it's own so not to accidentally choke him by making him throw up.

BONUS: I'm 99% sure he only ate 1 ft of rope. He must have been planning to snack again later because I found 1.5 ft of the fuzzy rope under the couch after I got out of panic mode! A 1 ft piece is much better than a 2.5 ft one!

My brutie passed a 3 foot length of rope leash 10 days after he swallowed it (out his butt)-- hopefully this will happened if he did swallow it.

Glad you called a vet, I would ALWAYS call before inducing vomiting. Some things are dangerous to throw up. Twice at daycare, Tux swallowed the tassles on a Kong wubba. After a week, he puked it up (the first time) and pooped it out (second time). This was a long time ago and he no longer goes to daycare

Thanks everyone. He's currently fine with plenty of appetite and doesn't seem uncomfortable at all. So far, so good. Will update when it passes (I hope I hope I hope!).

Eek! Glad it is only one foot and not 2 1/2.

One thing this makes me think of, is when it does pass, there is the chance it could get "stuck". My understanding is you shouldn't pull on it, because it could be tangled somewhere. Maybe ask your vet what to do in the event it doesn't pass easily?
