Heartgard and an organic/natural flea/tick spray in the summer with hearty vigilance, the rest of the time Frontline Plus. We can't keep her out of water for the recommended 3 days on Frontline, so we just spray her with the natural spray, and so far it's worked.

Revolution here as well. Revolution is a topical liquid. Once a month, a treat in my hand and he is nibbling at it I squirt it between his shoulder blades and done. No swimming for 24 hours

Thanks for all the replies! I will have to do a little research and talk to the vet, it seems like.

Man, I wish we didn't have to worry about fleas. They even come in on DH's legs, and when we were in the (very nice) library the other day, we noticed them hopping around on the carpeting even in there. Ugh!

Vectra 3D for fleas and ticks, as needed. Heartgard+ for HW. My vet just told me of 2 dogs with HW that were on preventative. They are long time patients and he doubts it is from improper use. It really scares me.

Interesting. I wonder what he meant when he said "improper use". How can a HW preventative be used improperly?

If you don't give it every 30 days, if you give it and they throw up within an hour, etc. I too have heard of dogs testing positive that were on the preventative. Someone on my local raw feeding group had a dog test positive, and she does give Heartguard every 30 days. She also said that Merial (company that owns HG) was not being super cooperative about covering the cost of treatment like they claim they will do, she has had to battle them over it.

Now I'm starting to wonder about the efficacy of these products...

Not given every 30 days. They are 2 different dogs from 2 different owners.

I absolutely do not mean to suggest you should not use the products. HW preventative has saved many dogs for years when used properly. I have heard reports of HW infection with owner stating the preventative was used as directed. It scares me for sure but I would continue as instructed by your vet.
