Wylie's eyes have been red and tearing since his Surgery to get neutered...

Last Friday Wylie was neutered. He came home and I noticed right away, his eyes were red and watering a lot, leaving dark trails down from the corner of his eyes. His right has been tearing more than the left. It also, looks like the bottom lids on both eyes are pulled out a bit and when you look down inside his lids, it's really red. Ive been cleaning the lines of dark from the corners of his eyes with toilet paper wet with warm water. He has a vet appointment tomorrow to see the Vet, because it doesn't seem to be getting better. He has a cone on and I've been keeping it on since Sunday, since it's really hard to get off and I get it on easy, but he has to be coaxed with a treat, but always afraid of his eyes getting injured, so just leave it on. I know it could have been from putting it back on when I was taking it on and off so he could eat or get a break from it, but I distinctly remember the eye stain running down from his eyes and how red they were when he first came home.

I have googled it, and it said online that they put a ointment on the dog's eyes when they get operated on. I'm hoping this is all it is, but have an appointment tomorrow to be sure. I'm hoping not an eye infection and if anything, would like to know when his eyes will get back to normal. They said I should be past the danger zone after the surgery once past the week mark, but could be up to 10 days. I'm not taking any chances and the poor guy is bored out of his mind. It's going to be a long 14 days, but at least I'm almost 1/2 through it.

I checked his stitches every day and had to go to the Vets on Sunday, because his sack was flat when he got home and Sunday morning it was almost the size of a small tennis ball, as if the testicles were still in there. So I brought him in and they said his stitches looked fine, but it was definitely swollen the sack and it's not unusual and was fluid in there. So they gave me some sedatives, because he was back to normal the next day after surgery. I've been keeping him on leash attached at the hip and just walking in the yard to go potty. He did get up on my bed a few times, but blocked it now so he can't jump on it. My bed is only 18'' off the ground. The Vet told me to give him a cold compress twice a day and about 10-15 minutes. They said it should help with the swelling and it will take awhile for the fluid to get absorbed back into the body.

Is the watery, red Eyes, something that is normal and when will they go back to normal if it's just from the surgery?

The eyes could be from the ointment -- perhaps the ointment didn't mesh well with him -- or even if they forgot ointment. The eyes get very dry during the surgery.

Welcome me to the world of neutering an adult dog! It's way easier when they are young. Sam's scrotum was swollen for quite some time. It is not unusual. I did the compress but it didn't seem to help. On top of the swelling, the cone gave him a hotspot from hell. That was worse than the neuter!

I may just call the vet and ask. Just to ease my mind though.

I don't mind risking an over react when it's eyes. I'd go right away. At the very least it must be uncomfortable and if he uses his paws to scratch at his eyes he could injure himself. Last Friday was a week ago, surely the bother from the ointment would be gone by now? Is he on pain meds? Wonder if it's a reaction to them?

Snowshoe, yes, he's on Carprofen 75mg. 1 Pill every 12 hours. He only has 2 left. Actually, his eyes look normal this morning, but am going to have him still see the vet, just in case. I'm hoping it was just the ointment and it's finally stopped bothering him.

I have never heard of the eye problem. However it does make sense it is the ointment. Please post back what you find out and I don't blame you for going to the vet one bit, better safe than sorry.

Sending some mojo that Wylie heals up quick and gets to go back to being a normal lab quickly.

It could be the ointment but we use artificial tear ointment and in over 20+ years in Veterinary medicine I have never seen that reaction. But it certainly could be an unusual reaction. Hope he is better today.

I would absolutely call the vet.

He is still on pain meds? I have lots of fosters spayed or neutered and pain meds are generally given maybe the next day but rarely beyond 36hours. If he was neutered last friday I don't understand why he would be getting meds Monday never mind today.

    Tanya,
Carprofen -It is also used to relieve short-term post-operative pain, inflammation, and swelling after spaying, neutering, and other procedures. Carprofen reduces inflammation by inhibition of COX-2 and other sources of inflammatoryprostaglandins. This is targeted protection, in that it does not interfere with COX-1 activity.

He has it more for the Inflammation and the swelling I think, as his scrotum is still swollen. He doesn't act like he's in pain, so I'm sure it's just for the stuff I just said. He has two more pills and he's done with them. The vet said today that I have to keep the cone on for another week, because of the swelling in the scrotum and even though the stitches are healing fine, if he licks at the scrotum it could cause problems and more swelling. She said it's good that it's not hard and not full like a water balloon, but definitely swollen.

The eyes are fine, like I thought this morning, the Vet didn't charge me, which was nice. She said it could have been something like he can't use his paws to wipe his eyes, because of the cone or maybe something was irritating the eyes, but they looked normal to the vet this morning.

Jeff, I haven't been on the board in awhile. Did you ever get Hemi neutered? I know one of the last few times I was on the board, you were thinking of getting it done, because he was not focused and chasing the ladies at the dog camp.

    Yep, Hemi is sans-balls.

It was horrible, heartbreaking and super stressful. Hemi is fine. I was a nervous wreck. I didn't really write about it on the boards because I was so torn by it. I dropped Hemi off at 7 a.m. they called at 8:30 said he was done and doing well and I could pick him up at 2. I picked him up, and in his drunken post op state he was literally crawling on his belly to get to a spot on the floor to smell. He was super obsessed even in a drunken state maybe even more.

Then I got him home, he was crying and whining, like he was in constant pain. I called the vet back after an hour and they said normal for probably 24 hours, some dogs do some don't. I searched the web and yeah some do some don't. But the whining was just breaking my heart. I sat on the floor with him the whole evening and comforted him. Next day I went back to work, feeling horrible, only to see him on Hemi cam licking his incision for like a half hour so I went home. Called the vet got the cone of shame. Hemi had to be crated at night with the cone, crated during the day with the cone. I blocked off all the furniture and couches. He still managed to sneak on them. Vet told me we could do regular leashed walks of two miles though after day 3. This helped a lot get some energy out of him. We were both glad day 7 hit. He could get in bed. Oh and when I was home, he had to wear a pair of my boxer briefs. I turned them around so the tail could go through the hole. About day 4 or 5 when he was really feeling better he started a new game. He would walk out of the room, get his undies, i called them, off and come back with them in his mouth. Look what I got dad, come chase me and put them back on. Another one of those things in life I never thought I would do, chase a dog down to put underwear on him.

I had some concerns around the incision site it really puffed up and got lumpy, I took pictures and emailed them to the vet. They gave me a steroidal cream I put on the incision twice a day. All in all it wasn't pleasant for either of us. I think me more than him. I gained 10 lbs, I think in just stress and eating plus no exercise for me. Hemi healed up just fine. One of the things I opted for was laser treatments. I am not sure if you remember last year Hemi tore the pads on his feet and they did a laser treatment and they healed extremely fast. This was an optional treatment after the surgery and I opted for it.

However I have noticed no real changes yet. He might be a little calmer, just a little, that's debatable. Last night we were at his training class he wasn't able to even focus at. It was the last night and he had no issue what so ever. He stopped to smell a couple spots but kept right on going.

Hemi sneaking on to the couch under his exercise ball.
