Great idea; once his sutures are removed and I get the go ahead, I will try!

I don't know anything about recovery from this particular surgery, but if he's that bad, you may want to talk to your vet about giving him Ace. When Lily had her knee surgery at 11 months old, her surgeon sent me home with Ace to keep her calm. She was still a puppy and had so much energy, but her knee needed to heal and couldn't take the beating she wanted to give it. So I used the Ace for the first 2 weeks or so. It didn't knock her out completely, but it made her very mellow. I hated using it, but it was for her own good. The last thing you want is for the surgery to fail.

What exactly is Ace? Yes, I am worried - I don't want the surgery to fail.

Acepromazine. It's a tranquilizer, most often used when your pet has to be sedated for x-rays, etc. I only gave Lily 1/4 of a pill at a time, just enough to make her mellow, not completely sedate her.

I was also going to suggest Ace. Jackson had elbow surgery last Monday as well (sounds pretty similar to the one that your pup had) and his surgeon sent us home with pain meds and Acepromazine for sedation. Jackson is mostly off of the pain meds, but we're giving him about 1/4 Ace every 12 hours or so to keep him mellow. I hate having to sedate Jackson, but it's imperative that he stay quiet for his elbow to heal properly. Tradeoffs, right? The surgeon did say that we may have to increase his dose if he develops a tolerance over the 6 week recovery period. But hopefully we can add some swim therapy to help burn some energy.

We are also doing a lot of frozen Kongs, pickle pocket toy, new bones for chewing, etc. It takes Jackson over an hour to eat his dinner, when it normally takes about 5 minutes, and he's pretty tired afterwards. Never thought I'd want a dog to be this lazy, but I'll take it for the next 5 weeks.

Now I'm definitely not leaving the vet's office without it. Marlin had both elbows done; all his cartiliage was worn away. He had bone on bone contact. So now that surgery is done, I can understand why he feel 1000% better. But at the same time, his whining/crying while he carries a bone in his mouth hoping to play--is driving me crazy!

Definitely get it. The one thing I didn't want to risk was a case of the zoomies, and this definitely prevents it. Our vet gave us 25mg pills, but a 1/4 pill is enough for Jackson at this point. It takes about 30 minutes to kick in. Good luck with the recovery! It's gonna be a long road, but will be so much better once they're healed.
