One of our vets several years ago suggested buying Cosamin DS, the human med, rather than Cosequin DS, the vet med, because it had the same ingredients but the human version would cost less. You might want to see if that's still true- from checking on Amazon, it looks like it is.

Our ortho vet recommended Cosequin DS with MSM or Dasuquin with MSM. She didn't care which one as long as it had the MSM. I also use Grizzly Salmon oil and Vitamin C. There are many on here who use human versions of fish oil or Omega-3s in capsule form.

I don't buy any of them from the vet- either from Amazon or at Target, Walmart, somewhere like that. I don't have a Costco or Sam's Club membership any longer.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

When giving fish oil please be sure to supplement with vit. E. Fish oil without E will eventually deplete the body of vit. E. Same for humans. THe source of E is important too.

Patty - you had talked about this previously, before the board crashed. I started giving Emma one human grade vitamin E cap 3 times per week. Is that an adequate amount to supplement the salmon oil she gets daily? It really worries me that I gave her the salmon oil, Hylasport and vitamin C for a while before I became aware of this. My vet never even suggested adding the vitamin E which really upset me.

I was using Flexicose - liquid glucosamine; worked 100 times better, IMHO, then powdered glucosamine.

I have since switched the dogs to K9 Health liquid glucosamine, much bigger bottle for less $$$; I do MSM, Vit E, Coconut oil as well.

I *was* doing green lipid mussel until I read the human side-effect studies; they were saying that humans taking the same amount a 70lb dog would need (just using dosage percentages) were showing symptoms of high liver values, yellowing of the gums, liver problems in general.

Whether that's happening in dogs or not; I don't know. But I'm not taking that chance; refuse to give something that is supposed to *help* and yet clearly is causing issues to humans anyways.
