Glucosamine and fish oil, OTC or Vet?

Jax is 15 months old and has been diagnosed with hip dysplasia. The vet has suggested fish oil and glucosamine supplements.

My question is do I use over the counter supplements or purchase them from the vet. Can I use human or the ones formulated for dogs?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Human ones work fine. Just remember not all supplements will work the same way on every dog. We did Cosequin, something else from the vet, the Costco variety, and finally settled on Canine Hylasport. For our dogs, THAT worked the best and was the most cost effective.

You'll probably get lots of recommendations for brands to try....you can get both over the counter. For fish oil, you can use a human or dog one. If you use a human one though, get a good quality one, not just a brand from Walmart or the drug store. I use Grizzly Salmon Oil which is for dogs and is in liquid form that you pump over the food. And I am a big fan of Springtime, Inc for joint supplements, and other things. They have a few different things to choose from, you can get higher strength supplements if the HD is bad. And they have boswellia in some of them, which can help relieve any pain. That is more for older arthritic dogs though, at 15 months unless he has very severe HD, he probably would not need that yet. I use both Longevity and Joint Health Chewables.

I have an older girl with moderate hip and spinal arthritis. I use Hylasport, Grizzly Salmon Oil and vitamin C daily and a dose of vitamin E 3 times per week. This formula has worked wonders for her.

So sorry to hear about your pup, was he diagnosed via X-ray? Is surgery a possibility? I would definitely consult an ortho vet, if at all posdible. Poor guy, hopefully his HD is mild and he has a fairly normal life.

We are giving Hylasport in equal parts due to recommendations here and the flexible dosing as it is a powder. So each of our 3 can have what seems to be best.

Also giving grizzly Pollock oil from Amazon seems to help a lot with cutting down dry flaky skin. Supposed to help with joints as well. Might be slightly off topic - I was taking 2000mg fish oil daily for about 5 years. After stopping I felt my joints and back to be sore if sitting for a while. So, I guess fish oil helps joint, in my opinion based on personal use. Why did I stop? Cardio doc told me to stop due to potential prostate cancer risk. Primary care doc and Oncologist said nothing to worry about.

The x-ray looked ok. But when she manipulated it she found that it goes in and out easily. The ortho vet says he's too old for a TPO and that it's mild at this point so we will do supplements and see how it goes.

At this point it doesn't seem to hurt when it happens it's more of an irritation. It usually happens when he's playing with other dogs.

    Most importantly, keep him lean.

Macy is on grizzly salmon oil and glucosamine. She also swims a lot and I try and keep her weight on the lower side.

Niner takes Cosequin DS from Costco (cheapest suppose to be the only proven one). I don't think Charlie does well with chrondroitin so he does glycoflex II. Niner had elbow surgery and Charlie has some hip dysphasia but both dogs do well with their supplements. I give them both grizzly salmon oil.
