I'm so glad my family convinced me that it was ok. She was just what we needed at that time, and we had many happy memories with her for the next 12+ years.

We will try again in the future, and hopefully things will be different. It's going to be a long winter.

I feel for you. What's done is done at this point.

Parvo happens, even to the best of breeders. There WERE a lot of red flags that would have warned some away from this breeder, but unfortunately, not everyone knows what they re. The 6 week old thing was a HUGE flag. No one reputable sells pups that young.

The only recourse is to get your money back for the price of the puppy...nothing more, nothing less. Even if you turned it down (you were under stress in the vet's office), the breeder should still be willing to do it now. I know I would. If they won't, there isn't much you can do unless you feel like dealing with small claims court I imagine.

In my area, we recommend that the owner's clean the environment as thoroughly as possible and not bring in another young dog who has not completed puppy as well as adult booster vaccines for a period of no less than 2 years. Studies have indicated that virus lives in the environment for years if not decades (depending on the climate in your area).

Also, if this puppy was sick on the time frame you indicated, our Vets would determine you purchased a sick puppy. Echoing what the others have stated, reputable breeders would not allow you to take the puppy at such a young age. Period. Neither would they allow you to leave the premises without a signed contract.

My sympathies for the loss and the entire experience.

Holy cow, so she would have to wait at least two years before bringing home another puppy?

Very sorry you had to go through this whole experience.

yes unforutnately We had someone want to adopt one of the puppies we had born in rescue and we found out they had recently lost a puppy to parvo (thankfully before bringing the puppy to the home visit) and we had to decline the application. it's too high risk.

In rescue when you have had a dog with parvo on your property you cannot take on another puppy for awhile. Timeline depends I hear at least a year if not more.

Something to really discuss with a vet on what your options are.

Did you call the breeder and let her know you were going to put the pup to sleep? I agree that there were many red flags but at the same time if I was the breeder I would be peeved if a buyer refused for me to take a sick pup back, refused the refund and then pts the pup with no call to me or input from me, all in under a week or so? I am really sorry your pup was sick and I think at this point I would be very nice/polite and continue to try to make contact with the breeder. Refusing the return and refund may have voided any future refund.

Hi again. I didn't want her to make the hour long trip to the vets office not knowing if the pup would live or not. I didn't refuse a refund, I told her not to worry about it at that moment. She is not responding to my texts. I flat out asked if she intended on giving me a refund. No reply. I will give her a few more days, then I will decide if this is worth fighting, or chalk it up to a very sad and expensive lesson.

We are getting away for a couple days, so I will peek back in when we get home.

2 years is a long time to wait.

I know there is always the option of getting an older dog who has been vaccinated. Or, if you do want to get a puppy, I wonder if someone you know would be willing to let the puppy live with them until fully vaccinated? I know someone mentioned about waiting until they get their one year adult booster before they would be safe, but if they have the last round of puppy shots, and wait a month or so to do a titer test and see if that comes back positive for antibodies, I wonder if that would be sufficient? Some people who do limited vaccines don't even bother with the one year booster if the titer comes back positive after the puppy shots. Certainly don't want to risk anything, but might be worth talking to a vet about.

I'm sorry to hear about your puppy.
As for waiting two years ....
Wouldn't a really good house cleaning (with bleach?) be sufficient? Or even a professional house cleaner?Certainly the puppy wasn't in many areas of the house since you only had him/her for two days.
Certainly you wouldn't want to bring a puppy home and have it get sick also. But it seems like there should be a way to ensure the puppy's safety (keep puppy confined in one area of house and crate until vaccinated?).

I'm so very sorry to read about your ordeal and loss of the puppy. I went through something similar years ago, back when parvo first came about. Mine survived, fortunately. I hope your breeder comes through and refunds the purchase price. Unfortunately, Michigan is one of the states that doesn't have a puppy lemon law, so your only recourse would be small claims court. I hope it doesn't come to that.

It's more like ten months, not years.

Using bleach like it's suggested in the link you provided to clean the infected areas is good advice. This link below has a bit more info on disinfecting. Lawn and carpet are the worst, obviously, as bleach isn't good for those areas.
