    Question 6 months weight

Maggie just turned 6 months. She is 47 pounds. I feed her 3 times a day. Is her weight ok?

Does she look and feel good? You really need to put your hands on her. You should be able to not see ribs, but feel them under a little layer of fat (you don't want a comforter or a sheet of fat, but a light duvet is ideal).

Luna was about the same at 6 months and seems to have topped off at 60 pounds. She's been 60 pounds since she was a little under a year old.

I don't think weight is the best measure. You really have to look at, feel the dog to determine if they are growing "right". Bruce just turned 28 weeks, and he weighs 56 pounds. He's a nice solid, muscular dog, but if you just looked at him you'd think he was a bit thin, as he is long in leg at the moment. I bet in 2-3 months that will all change as his body grows into his legs.

Here is a link of the best weight/look of a a dog's weight. This is the best and simplest information I have found that accurately depicts what a dog should look like. Different breeds will look different but the same falls true for the most part. If we let our dogs get overweight or under weight we are actually doing them harm. Most dogs I see are overweight. As humans too many of us (MYSELF INCLUDED) relate food to pleasure and therefor we tend to pamper our pets with MORE food.

Now a fellow worker has a lab with 2 torn ACL's. I asked whet the dog weighed he told me 105 pounds. Wow I went over to see the dog. I believe the dog should weigh 80 pounds not 105lbs. I can only guess what could/might have been one of the contributing factors in the 2 torn ACL's. He will have to sort that out with his vet.
