I agree 100 percent! I would not give this to my dog...I would also worry about it.

it really is chose the lesser of two evils. either way we are treating our dogs with something we would ideally not like to.
I have always used frontline/advantix. It always bothers me how our dogs have always ran the other way as soon as the applicator was cracked open...even they know its nasty.

our good friends dog, just had a very close call with a tick born illness, so it brought it to the forefront that we are entering tick season out here.

A couple people have mentioned swimming and frontline. I thought it was only the first 24 hours that the dog could not get wet after applying the frontline. Someone please confirm that.

I also don't like topical and have never used until a few years ago when I had a flea issue. The regular did not work on fleas but the Plus did.

I have not used it since. But in Feb 2 of my girls were lyme positive so I plan on using it starting this spring.

Does anyone use it every 45 days (rather than every 30) and are you seeing the same results?

I have heard that HW meds can be spread out 40-45 days rather than every 30. I don't ask my vet these questions because they sell the product and make money on it so they want you to give it every 30 days.

I have read that apple cider vinegar can ward off fleas (not sure on ticks) and given every other day in food with water added (to cut the acidity) can keep fleas away. This worked for me last year. 1 tbsp. or a little less (I fill the cap of the bottle) in each dose was about what I gave. May be I did not have a flea issue in my yard last year but will give it again this year starting in spring.

"Food grade" diatomaceous earth sprinkled on the coat of the dog (yes it is safe for dogs) can also kill fleas and I believe ticks. It dries and cracks the shell and they dehydrate and die before they can do damage (ticks latching on) (fleas laying eggs etc.). I have it here and am going to be diligent this year in putting it on them. Thinking a couple times a week. Anyone else tried it?

I have a river in the back yard and used to have mosquito control spray for free (because of water on the property its free) but have not had a problem or needed it in quite a few years. I recently heard that they spray for ticks too so I am going to get them here this spring. I know this does not help for those that hike their dogs off property but if your dogs are mostly in your yard its something to call your county about. I was also told their spray is non toxic - natural but will check that out.

Another oral product for fleas and ticks I heard about is bravecto and only given every 12 weeks but I think it is about $60 a pill. Have to compare to what you pay for a monthly treatment. My vet does not carry it but will give a prescript to buy on line. Not sure if I will use it yet. I have a 3 month supply of frontline plus to use first starting this spring but am going to do more research on the bravecto and decide.

BRAVECTO: Chewable Flea & Tick Medicine

As for the nextguard - I don't think it has been on the market long enough to truly know the down side. Could be the same for bravecto.

A holistic product to consider and a number of people on this board have used (at least from before the board crashed) is bug-off-garlic. I have never used it but my sister has and swears by it. www.springtimeinc.com I know it is for ticks but not sure on fleas.

I am going to do the ACV, diatomaceous earth and maybe every other month on frontline plus this year and keep checking for fleas and ticks and see how it goes. May even consider the bug off garlic. Hoping to be able to get off frontline eventually and keep all good holistically.

Like many of you I hate the drugs we sometimes have to give - but I hate the positive tick testing too (not to mention the expense of doing C-6 to check lyme levels on a positive dog - cost of antibiotic and having to redo C-6 6 months later) Around here the C-6 is $100 and the antib is $100 for 30 days.

Here is some info. I have not read thru it yet:

Food grade diatomaceous earth for flea and tick treatment.

I have been using it for three months now, and it seems to work. Frontline and Advantage did not work and Trifexis did not take care of ticks and was so hard to get Cassie to eat. as it was big and nasty smelling. They gobble down the Nexguard and Heartguard.

I use garlic + ACV for my horse to keep flies and ticks away and it works well.

Frontline Plus is 48 hours without swimming but we always do 72.

douvledip1 - where are you in upstate NY? I have a place there and am up most weekends. (colder there than here in NJ). When do you start with preventatives for spring? We are in Westerlo, NY

I was thinking of starting end of March for the Frontline "Plus" I purchased (I did not get results with the regular Frontline a few years ago) but hoping to hold off a month.

What form of garlic do you give your horses? And ACV? and do you give it year round. If not when do you start and stop.

I was raised on a horse farm (all our horses are gone now 10 years) and we never dealt with ticks and fleas with them. But my neighbor with horses would benefit from what you are doing.

I live in Rensselaer County. I start with Frontline whenever it starts to thaw. Next week will be in the 40s, so she'll get her first Frontline probably then. She visits my parents a lot who live in Dutchess County (#1 in the country for Lyme cases) and we're always bopping around the Adirondacks so we're all tick magnets. She gets the Frontline once a month and before we go anywhere other than the yard I spray her with my natural fly spray (10 drops of each citronella, clove, spearmint oil, 1/4 cup ACV and 1/4 cup peppermint tea and the rest of the bottle with H2O). Not sure if the spray helps the Frontline, but my vet cleared it and it doesn't hurt. I use the same spray on my horse and he gets DESTROYED by flies without it.

I give the horse plain granulated garlic. I just get the big McCormick containers from BJs. He usually gets the garlic May-September and the ACV whenever it's above freezing. He gets spirulina daily year round for his cough and gets doubled up on it in the summer. I don't know if it helps with the flies.

Patty, I use bug off garlic....and have had both fleas and ticks while using it. I hate using topical too, but have found fleas twice and have a dog who is positive for ehrlichiosis and RMSF. If you read the fine print, Frontline can prevent fleas for up to three months, for people mor concerned with that. But it does need to be monthly for ticks. We have woodsy property that the dogs love to run, and spring/early summer is awful for ticks. I tried using natural methods last year, and had ticks in my bed and crawling on my walls after a hiking outing. I do feel best about Frontline, compared to other topicals. And pills for ticks and fleas make me nervous.

I just gave Oliver Bravecto. I prefer the chewables. They are easier to administer and we haven't had any negative reactions with them.

That is true, I wait 48 hours just to be sure. However, if the dog is swimming every day, the topical should be applied more often than once a month.

That's why I use flea and tick repelling collars instead of topicals during the summer months, when Cookie is constantly in some sort of water.
