I vaccinate Sam for lepto. He has never had a reaction to the vaccine. My friend's dog almost died from lepto so I'm very nervous about it.

Our Vet also doesn't recommend the Lepto vaccine either. He told me there has been some very bad reactions to it.

Toby has never been vaccinated for Lepto.

Shadow had a bad reaction to the vaccine cocktail (with Lepto) in 2013. Hives upon hives, racing heart, hi temp and was sick for 2 days. I was at the vets within 5 minutes of the first hive erupting and his entire body was covered solid with bumps by the time we got there. The staff grabbed him as I ran in the door calling that he was having a reaction, handed him of to the vets/techs and they started injecting him with their life-saving drugs.

We believe the Lepto vaccine was the culprit but are nervous about the others. This is the reason I now tell my friends to do separate vaccines so that they can ID the problem vaccine. The vet and I decided that he would only receive 3-yr rabies in the future and titer to see if others were actually needed. For 2014, he did receive an oral version of the bordetella vaccine (more gentle to the system) since kennel cough was running rampant thru the local doggy day care and many of those dogs use the park that we frequent. The vet provided me with a letter for the day care regarding his vaccination issues and that was considered sufficient(he only goes for care about 3x/year plus he gets his nails trimmed there).

Although Lepto is not often seen in the DC area, according to my vet, we do go to Michigan a few times a year. Evidently it is more prevalent in MI and Shadow spends his days swimming in lakes. But because she felt the Lepto vaccine might have been the primary cause of his reaction, the vet said that when I returned from a visit, I was to keep a close eye on his health and bring him in immediately if there was any concerns. She would be prepared to test and treat him if necessary. She feels his reaction to the vaccine is worse than the disease would be -- especially when she is prepared to treat him for the disease.

That being said...my friend's dog somehow contracted Lepto in our neighborhood (despite the Vet's statement in the above paragraph). That dog is extremely stressed by car rides so it had to be contracted within walking distance of her house. We are not aware of any other dog-park-dogs who contracted it so that is fortunate. Dahlia did nearly die, spent a week in the hospital and a month recuperating at home. She has recovered but now has seizures -- don't know if this is related to the Lepto but they didn't start until afterwards.
