But it really wasn't because she could clear up eye problems in a fraction of the time it took my regular vet to treat the eyes. I hope you figure out what's going on.
There was a small black spec in one eye but she is having problems with both eyes. Apparently she is still shutting her eyes but they are less red. We are off to the local vet in an hour and I am going to ask for a ophamologist recommendation if nothing concrete is established.

A lot improved with the ointment ... apparently it is 2 kinds of antibiotic and steriod. And by improvement, I mean she is by no means perfect yet. Vet and I agreed that if it is not considerably better on Monday we will go to a specialist. Knowing there ointment wasn't just an antibiotic made me happier. Vet did say that eye problems are often a result of other problems, didn't ask her to elaborate. I do think there is a 50/50 chance this won't clear up with the ointment .... wish I was more optimistic.

She seems cheerful enough, is allowed to go on her walks, and will play with my younger dog who I have to pull off Cedar a bit as she is a wild girl (hence the fact it is going to be a long year waiting for a younger playmate to be born).

Thanks. Got the name of a very good one (he is on that list) and a backup good one as the very good one is often very backed up (backup is on the list to). I did very Cleary ask the vet whether I should go right there but she assured me to give the current treatment a chance.

I will keep you all posted.

Thanks so much for your help.

If it turns out to be the golden retriever eye issue, it goes to prove you need to get certification on parents ... unless it is a rescue dog like Cedar. I read 1 in 10 goldens over the age of 8 come down with the eye issue which was mentioned in the post below.

If it turns out to be thyroid....and her meds are increased....slight dry eye might remain. I have drier eyes than normal now but my dose of Synthroid is seemingly perfect for me in all other ways. I use ointment in my eyes every night or else practically everything with fumes (like facial products) bother them a lot more (there are still some things with a slight drying effect...like some sunscreen products...that aggravate the heck out of them and turn them red). She may still benefit from a plain ophthalmic ointment on a daily basis (overnight since it really puts things out of focus for a while).

I would doubt it was an abrasion in both eyes. But so you know for future - if your dog ever has a scratched cornea, or you suspect one, never use an ointment with a steroid in it. My regular vet treated my girl properly (many follow up die tests) and said it was healed and changed the meds to one with steroids. Luckily before I used the new med I had an optho examine her and she was in fact "not healed".

Make sure they do a full thyroid panel of T3, T4, Free T3 and Free T4.

Hoping you get answers on her eyes and it is nothing serious and easily treated.
