And, I feel like an idiot b/c I never even knew there was such a thing or that it could happen.
Has anyone had this? My puppy has one. I didn't even realize. I have always left a flat collar on my dogs at all times. He's microchipped, so there is that, but I prefer a collar on. I guess I need to take it off at night and also perhaps rotate them so it's never wet. My vet said that it's more common in thicker coated dogs and those with neck flaps. It was treated but still seems oozy. (He had it shaved, cleaned, a laser treatment, and is on abx and an anti-inflammatory).

The only time I have a collar on the dogs is when I have them on a leash. Other than that, they are naked. Hot spots can be a pain, hope it clears up quick.
Definitely take the collar off when pup is inside, a wet collar should never be left on. You can try some Gold Bond powder to dry it up. I have also heard Iodine, applied 3 x's daily will help assist in drying up a hot spot. (use one or the other) I would not give anti-inflammatory drugs for a hot spot, under any circumstances.

My dogs are on an electric fence and I leave on a flat collar. The electric fence collar I give them breaks from. I have a mini-schnauzer and he has never had an issue, but I guess I am not used to the difference in coats. I also had a Doberman years ago, but again, different coats. I could leave my Dobie in a collar and also my schnauzer, but not my lab. I feel awful.
Why not the anti-inflammatory? It's a pretty big spot.
My vet routinely gives an anti-inflammatory for things like hot spots for a few days to get the pain or itching under control so the dog is less likely to scratch or bother the area until it starts healing. It's a short term thing and I don't have an issue with it. It's long-term use of anti-inflammatory drugs or steroids that I'm more concerned with.
My dogs are on an electric fence also when outside. They usually wear their collars during the day and their collars are off at night. I also never leave a collar on if they're in a crate. If my dogs' collars are wet, I make sure the dog is dry around the neck and put another collar on them. My older boy has a super thick coat and lots of dewlaps as well. He can stay wet a long time if I'm not careful. If we're going swimming intentionally, I use a waterproof collar and put their usual collar back on them after they're dry.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Ah, so sorry. Melody had a hot spot on the side of her face, up under the ear flap so letting it air out was difficult. Once a day I rinsed it with luke warm water with hand held shower head. Rinsed until the crusties started washing off. No rubbing. Padded dry, no rubbing. Let air dry and then applied Gold Bond powder (in the yellow/gold container).
Be sure to protect eyes and nose as Gold Bond is lofty.
After a week of this treatment, vet said it was the quickest healing hot spot she had ever seen. It did take a while longer for it to heal completely.
I would leave the collar off as much as possible so there is no irritation.
Your pup is very lucky to have you. I know this is one more thing but this one should resolve relatively quickly.
Mulder used to get them on his cheek/neck near his ears. Turns out for him, it was from a chicken intolerance. They always healed up nicely once the area was shaved and exposed to the air. They gave me some sort of spray to put on it, but nothing systemic.

try some gold bond powder on the spot, it helps dry it out.
then ditch the collar unless going out.
