I also want to mention, just because they are "inside" dogs doesn't mean they need to be over-bathed. The only dogs of mine that get baths are the show dogs. The "pets" may get rinsed with water unless they are stinky!

Normally I would say every couple weeks is too much, however a marsh is much different than a lake or stream where water has some movement and is overall decent quality. I would expect a marsh to have a much higher content of bacteria and nasty things in it. So, if he needs it, then bath but make sure to use a dog specific dog shampoo- they are made to not strip oil from the coat. People shampoo, dishwashing soap and even some other animal shampoo are made to strip the oil. And I would use a dog specific conditioner afterwards. When I was showing and on the show circuit many of my dogs were bathed (dog shampoo and dog conditioner)on a weekly basis and they had no skin issues or dry skin. I agree with high protein and high fat- that often has much more to do with dry skin than bathing. Make sure to rinse extra well- shampoo left on will look like dandruff.

i have fed chili oabout a dozen different brands of food. some give him dandruff, some dont. so my personal experience is that the food you feed could be causing it. I am not 100% sure on this. but just something that correlates.

Agree with everything mentioned above. Use fish oil supplements. Make sure the shampoo you are using is dog specific.

You can also try a spray on conditioner. We use One Shot spray when we are on the road or at shows. Its just a spray that I comb through with a nylon brush. It has a refreshing scent - doesn't bother the dog. Adds a nice shine and helps spread oils through the coat.

We have been using a good brand of dog shampoo and conditioner after he has been in the marsh for 3-4 hunts (3-4 days in a row)...simply hosing him off when we get home is what I have been doing. Is blue buffalo a brand that any of you notice dandruff with?

Luna had dry skin on Blue Buffalo. I switched her off of it because of the quality control issues, the dandruff didn't concern me.

I would try the Grizzly salmon oil. I find I only have to use it once a week. Luna gets a bath maybe once every 3 months, which is usually how often she rolls in something disgusting.

You might want to try coconut oil! I've used it for Molly before. Coconut Oil can be bought at natural food stores, and is almost like a paste. If you work it into Cooter's coat, he'll have a softer coat too - and dandruff is gone!

Yikes, doesn't that make a horrible mess of your furniture and rugs and pant legs? I thought people used the coconut oil by adding it to food, same as salmon oil?

Definitely not a mess! You don't use a liberal amount. You use actually a very minimal amount. I got the tip from a holistic vet and it's worked wonders for her coat. You can add it to food if you choose, but applying directly to her coat has made a big difference (and my couches and rugs remain perfectly intact )
