1 year old choc with dandruff, what can i do?

My one year old male Cooter loves to duck hunt and be in the water. I noticed that his coat has white flakes frequently. We use oatmeal shampoo and conditioner; is there anything else I can use to rid him of this?

How often are you bathing with the shampoo?

Did your heat just go on? Do you check the humidity levels in your house and use a humidifier?

If you are only noticing the dandruff "frequently" and not all the time it could be due to the above. My boy had dandruff all the time and we do use a humidifier. He also had a very harsh coat. I added EFAs to his diet, essential fatty acids. Lots of folks here use Grizzly Salmon Oil. I found human brand Omega 3-6-9 capsules did the trick, 1300 mg. I think it was. Two a day.

I second the humidifier. I give Grizzly Salmon oil daily too.

    Hello and Welcome!

Our yellow, Mardi, is shedding right now and has dandruff. It's normal to see this during shedding. Have had black labs do the same thing.

My recommendation is to not bathe unless absolutely necessary. Baths here are only twice a year, during shed, to help release the undercoat. In between is plenty of brushing to get out loose fur and help distribute natural oils. After swimming in ponds, etc., a rinse with clear water is all that should be necessary. Of course, there are the occasional rolls in stinky stuff which require a full out bath.

I also give Grizzly salmon oil.

What are you feeding? Is something lacking in his diet?

No humidifier. Feed with Blue Buffalo puppy large bred. Bath once every two weeks due to him being in the marsh and being an inside dog.

The food you feed probably doesn't have enough protein/fat. If you are hunting with the dog, you can put him on a Performance Based food, like Pro Plan Sport 30/20. And add fish oil.

I agree with Jen C regarding food...but I also wanted to mention that you are most likely over-bathing him.

Labs hardly every need baths...maybe once a year..but every two weeks may be giving him dry skin.
