    Mast Cell Tumors

My best friend has an 8-year-old black lab who was just diagnosed with a mast cell tumor. It's small and in her armpit area. It will be removed on Friday, but she understandably wants to know all she can about fighting this. She is going to make an appointment with my holistic vet, but I'm not sure how soon she'll be able to get in. I know several people here have unfortunately had to deal with this. Are there any diet changes, supplements, etc. that she should begin now? Any other advice? TIA!

I have no experience, but it seems like I have read people posting that giving benadryl can help keep MCTs from growing?

Shasta had surgery this past April to remove, from her side, what turned out to be a Grade 2 MCT. Luckily they got it all with surgery.

The goal is to build up their immune system.

Basically I blended traditional vet medicine with holistic medicine.

She now gets 1 Benedryl pill/day.

I changed her to the GF version of the food brand she was already eating. I chose the lowest carb % of all the GF that they offered in that brand.
Just because something is GF does not mean it is low carb. I try to also limit her treat to GF as well.

I also added Omega 3s (Amazon.com : DVM PHARMACEUTICALS 250 Count Free Form Snip Tip Nutritional Supplements for Dogs, Medium/Large : Pet Bone And Joint Supplements : Pet Supplies) and Vitamin E to her diet.

Started her on Essiac Tea and Milk Thistle as well as another supplement whose name I can not remember right now.

I took her to a Holistic Vet to get a consult. She is the one who started me on the above Omega 3 and Vitamin E. She also started her on a Anti neoplasia Powder as well as something for her "Yin". After the first bottle, I did not continue with the Yin, but have continued with the Anti Neoplasia powder.

I am sorry this is all so disjointed, just wanted to get you the information as I know how it is when you know nothing and you're looking for all the help you can get.
If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

    benedryl during the surgery.

it doesn't have to be a death sentence but from now on she should be checking every lump and bump.
we have survived MCT with another dog.

Remove carbs from her diet and start her on a good dose of Benadryl immediately, 200 milligrams, (4 caplets). As mentioned above, Benadryl can be continued after surgery.

Sending good thoughts for your friend and her dog.

My girl Fannie was 14 years old when she had one removed from her armpit. I don't have any recommendations for you, but fingers and paws crossed for a good outcome!

I don't mean to hijack...but how can you tell if a GF food is low-carb? Is it listed anywhere on the bag?
