    Arrow Eyes swollen shut

My 2 yr old labrador, Farrah, is suffering from something. It just happened. I was on the floor with her and her two sisters loving on them while they played with their toys (old toys nothing new). They were all acting fine and looked normal. I walked away maybe 30 minutes to give my daughter a bath and put her to bed. And when I came back, her eyes were swelling up and were extremely watery. Now 20 min later they are almost swollen shut. While I was bathing my daughter, she napped in her bed and never got up from what my fiancé said. She seems fine but seems uncomfortable. What could this be?

I have no idea but this would warrant a trip to the vet for me. Could it have been some sort of allergy? Have you given the vet a call?

    Sending good thoughts your way.

I was thinking it might have been allergies. But then again, she hasn't been in anything to have caused a bad reaction like this. It's been nice outside so we have played with the three of them in the backyard, so It wouldn't be something from another animal. I will make an appointment with her vet when they open in the morning. It's almost 1 AM here and we don't have very many emergency vets open out here this late trying to stay awake as long as I can to keep an eye on her. She doesn't seem to be in pain. I can tell she's having a hard time keeping her eyes open though. Just hope the swelling hoes down. Thank you for your thoughts!

Have you tried calling the emergency vet for advice until your normal vet clinic opens?

Yea, I did but they think it's seasonal allergies. I disagree though. I mean it happened so fast. I've seen all three of them have allergies but this is more of a bacterial or viral infection. But I'm no vet. She doesn't seem to be in any pain. More discomfort from not being able to open her eyes. Below you can see the difference.

I hope she made it through the night without things getting worse. That is the kind of situation for which I keep Benadryl and eye saline solution in the house. It can help things plateau or improve. Sometimes eyes swelling shut are followed by a more general reaction. Even washing the eyes out with water can help. Let us know how she is doing and what the vet says. I might be inclined to have called ahead and be on the vet's doorstep this morning when they open if it is still a problem. Washing her paws and putting a cone on her can help protect her itchy eyes.

My guess would be a reaction to some kind of insect bite. I would give Benadryl. A phone call to the nearest emergency Vet would tell you how much to give her. I have been told one human strength dosage. Surely the E-Vet would tell you that over the phone? The dosage?

I underlined guess because that's all I can do, or you, and quite likely the Vet too. Is she better now?

Benadryl dosage is one mg per pound of weight.

I agree. When Chloe was a puppy, she had something similar happen where she was fine, and then all of a sudden her face started swelling up. Vet's best guess was that she ate a spider! A shot of Benadryl and she was much improved.
