Either way, I don't restrict water, because they will hoard water when they have access to it if you do. It is much healthier for the puppy/dog to drink when they are thirsty, even if they are just playing in it or drinking it for the novelty of it. Eventually he will realize that there is never a shortage of water, and will regulate himself, as long as you don't restrict it.

My girls drink a lot of water per day, and I just clean and refill their water buckets as needed.
This was an older post that I had on another forum that didn't get any responses and this was one of my main concerns so I am grateful for everyone responding! He is now 24 lbs and will be 13 weeks old tomorrow. Is this something he will grow out of?

Yes, I think so. If you don't make a big deal out of the water, or remove it, it will stop being a novelty or guarded resource for him. It may be hard to ignore him, and it may take a while because he is a puppy, but yes. :-)

Definitely. Just be calm, don't react, don't make it a big deal. And if the drinking loudly bothers you, don't get a Drinkwell fountain because that makes drinking extra fun!

I only have the water outside they learn to indicate to go out quicker that way and they do not make a mess inside, all of mine like to guzzle guzzle guzzle all day long especially if they go to the pond then its double guzzle time

I have started filling the bowl up and not putting a tiny bit in at a time like I used to and have stopped asking him to move away from the bowl when I feel like he has been there a little too long and have noticed a difference. He doesn't go through the whole bowl at once anymore and will take smaller drinks and just walk away on his own. I appreciate all the advice. Just ignoring him has helped. Since he isn't vomiting or peeing more, he must actually be thirsty so I let him be. Thanks again!
