So the vet isn't sure what the problem is and suspects it is a viral infection that then evolved into a bacterial infection so she is going to have us try
a round of antibiotics to see if it resolves. A fungal infection can happen in dogs with long noses, including labs (though mine is English and doesn't have a particularly long nose).
Fungal infections happen more if the dog is older or is immunocompromised but the vet said if the antibiotics don't work, fungal could be a possibility. I really hope that is not it. I started looking into treatments for fungal nose infections in dogs and they are very hard to cure. I'm thinking this is more bacterial as our younger dog is sneezing too but not nearly as impacted as the older dog and fungal is harder to spread around.
Dogs can pick up viral or bacterial nose infections apparently just from sniffing dog waste around the neighborhood if another dog is sick, the vet said.
My dog is a big sniffer. So we'll see how it goes. I really hope the medication helps because the poor dog is so congested.

So the antibiotics definitely have helped. Sarge is sneezing less and less, but he's stills sneezing, particularly in the morning. And he has some of his energy back, not quite 100 percent, though. He was out in the snow today running around and seems fine at the moment. I think the real test will be when the antibiotic treatment ends. Hopefully he will remain well.

Great update! Sure hope this is the answer to the problem.

One thought, you have been having very cold weather there and heater has probably been working a lot. If you have a hot air system, do you have a humidifier? My nose has been so dry with the heat pumping. If you don't have a humidifier, put a pan full of water on the stove, bring to a boil and then turn way down to add moisture to the air. Might help.

    Sending more healing thoughts.

Are you giving Probiotics? If not, now would be a good time to start; they put the good bacteria back into the system, the stuff the antibiotic is going to kill off as well as the infection.

Give the probiotic 2hrs apart from the antibiotic, however.
