A tiny cut can let the infection in. My one Lab gets them on his face or forehead now and then. The last time we were at a Lab gathering and he was swimming.

My dog Huckleberry got a scratch on his head on a hike. It was a pretty minor scratch but he scratched it constantly. He would never let it heal. It took months and finally a cone to get it to heal. But sounds like this came on quickly with no known cause. So, I would lean towards a hot spot. But I don't know.
Hope it heals quickly. Curious what the vet said.

We are back from our stressful adventure to the vet. He did say it was a hotspot, tried to shave it but Hunter wanted absolutely nothing to do with that business. He gave it a good scrub, which gave myself and the vet tech a good workout trying to keep him still, and a spray for it to use twice a day. He also had his yearly exam and shots and he's looking good. 87 lbs now... if he grows anymore he will be bigger than me!

I do hope the hotspot goes away soon though. It's not pleasant looking at all :/

Glad to hear you found out what the spot was. Hoping it heals and disappears in no time!
