Bordetella at same time as spay

Is it okay to have the vet give our dog a bordetella vaccine when she is spayed? We need to board her about a month after her spay and the kennel requires a bordetella vaccine, which she hasn't had.

There are folks who will recommend that vaccinations only be done in non stressful/ healthy periods and there are no scientific studies in a controlled environment to definitively say one way or the other that I'm aware of. . I would ask your vets opinion. We have mixed procedures and vaccinations with no ill effects but that is only 1 example.

Why not just do the vaccine when you bring her in for her spay checkup? I wouldn't do it same day as anesthesia.

I agree with doubledip. Anesthesia is hard enough on the liver and over all system; I would wait till your girl's immune system is not already stressed. According to PetMed, it takes only 5 days to reach effective immunity to the one specific strain in the vaccine, so if you have a month between her spay and when you're boarding her, she has some time to heal up first. Just my opinion.

I wouldn't. She will be stressed already with the surgery, no need to stress her more with vaccines.

I wouldnt give her the vaccine at the same time. I d either take her a week or two before the spay or a week or two after.

Bordetella is just a poof up the nose at most Vet's these days. Though it could still be an injection. You could pay for it at the time of spay, go back in a couple of weeks (for the spay recheck if there is one) and I bet your Vet wouldn't charge you for another office visit. Check with the boarding kennel to see how far in advance they want it to be done. 10 to 14 days is customary.

Or go ahead of the spay and then she's protected, as much as she will be since it doesn't cover all strains, but then she will be protected from other dogs at the Vet's while in for the spay.

I don't see a big harm either way honestly. it's not ideal but kennel cough generally is just a spray up the nose.

While not ideal, the rsecue I foster for does vaccinations on day of spay (they prefer it to waiting and doing it a few days after). With rescue and volunteers and transport it can be hard to do things "the ideal way". haven't heard of any of them having issues.

If you are going to vaccinate for bordatella, you may as well have her well covered before the irritating trach tube for anesthesia. I would give her the vaccine ideally 3 weeks before the spay, which would ideally be a month before the boarding. My guess is that you do not have that much time, though.

The negative on the intranasal vaccine is a mild case of kennel cough in many brands; you can read it on the product inserts. It is safer than the injectable for small dogs, but that does not apply to Labs!

I wouldn't do any shots, intranasals, anything at the same time of any operations...
